When we replaced our AC a few years back the technician installed a temporary hard start kit on the old unit to get our system running while waiting for a replacement system. This was fantastic as the temperature was in the high 90s F (unusually high for PA) when the old unit stopped working. I did ask him about how this worked and now I understand more after watching the video.

Don’t wait for the compressor to show signs of failing to install a hard start kit. You should install a 5-2-1 hard start because it has a potential relay that drops the kit out after the compressor starts. Clean your condenser coil every spring, replace your filters every two months, test the capacitor twice a year and install a surge protector on the disconnect switch along with the 5-2-1 hard start kit. You may never need more service than that.

Nice video. I use to install those out in the country where voltage was sketchy. They worked good on areas of minimal voltage problems. Thanks for the video.

I have found several of those Supco's blown up in units, I prefer the 5-2-1's

Exactly the information I needed in a straightforward explanation. Thank you so much.

Usually if the duel capacitor is bad the condenser fan will not start also as they are built together and if one goes bad the other one will also. In my opinion if the top of the capacitor is bulged, there is no need to test it. Just chunk it. Thanks for the video.

I got one of those. I just leave it in there. Jay introduced me to it. But it’s nice to see that you use them as well.

From a contractor: To have a hard start kit installed on your compressor, you can expect to pay anywhere from $300 to $350. Our prices always include the cost of labor and parts. The overall price of a hard start kit is cheaper than paying for a compressor replacement which can be $2, 500 or even more.
$20 part, 10 minutes work.

Thanks!! This vid came in handy. I had one thing for the wire on fan and I thought I had to connect one of the cables to the fan port (old setup had it that way) seemed to work fine with one to herm and one to common

Ben you need to ensure that the fused disconnect is properly selectively coordinated with the breaker. If done well it can be helpful in addressing transients, surges, and swells especially on start up of fan and compressor far better than a breaker alone.

Also a good rule of thumb is Check your AMP’s with and without your hard start which will give you an idea of how the compressor is running and the Service Call Pro App we use we take pictures of them so next service call we check again and will let you know if it truly helps for long term or if the Compressor is slowly dying

I recommend to measure transient current:
- if starting current is over 7 times of nominal current you have to search insulation malfunction between windings;
- if starting current is above 7 times of nominal current you have small cracks in coil and the motor should be rewinded.
