It's every mac user's nightmare to see such icons. This happened to me for the first time. I tried the command + r and the alt + power key several times but it failed. What finally worked for me was I let the mac rest for a couple of minutes and moved it to a location that is near the wifi server.

Finally, it worked! I had to sacrifice deleting every single file on my mac. I'm just glad it worked out although the OS has reverted to Yosemite. I'm trying to upgrade it slowly before putting back my old files.

oh god thank you so much. I'm selling my 2011 macbook air to my friend and the prohibitory sign popped up when I restarted the macbook. Another video I watched said I had to unscrew the bottom of macbook, it was too risky lol. Life saver

i once also got a -2002u error.

the solution was as follows.

if you have dhcp enabled on your router, you should set dns servers for it too (both of mine proved to be 0.0.0.0). so i changed them to google ones (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as alternative) everywhere, and the connection went through.

when downloading the latest operating system (high sierra) from internet recovery, i also encountered an error saying that there was no connection to apple servers (something like lost or dropped). this is because by the time i started the recovery, the system had already forgotten wi-fi password (that made me smile).

Ok guys so I just had this happen to mine (I was super scared) but what worked for me was:
1. Turn off your Mac (I’m using MacBook Air)
2. Hold the power button and option key but release ONLY the power key and keep holding option until the WiFi bar appears
3. Find your WiFi and connect to it with your password
4. Click “internet restore” and wait until you see “disk utility” (should have a grey background with four tabs) or something similar
5. Go to the last option and navigate to the erase tab and select your hard drive (on the left and is usually the option at the top of the column) and name it something you can remember (AND KEEP IN MIND: THIS WIPES OUT ALL YOUR FILES:(, but it is the only way I was able to revive my Mac) and tap erase, and then hit the red x on this tab
6. Now, tap “Download OSX” or something along these lines
7. Now, install this OS by hitting agree (this may not be the latest version, but you can install it later) until it starts to install
8. Wait... wait...
9. Your Mac should boot up and may bring you to a page where it installs Mac OS X once again, so please be patient:)
10. Wait some more...
11. Yay!:)Your computer should show a big green check mark and restart shortly after, so wait until it’s done
12. Fill out your info as usual, and enjoy!

Why didn’t you do option “restore”? Is that not a good idea?
