Thank you Evelyn! This is very informative and well done. Great resource to help people understand the hazzards of dieting vs healthy eating. Outstanding!

Hi Adina--In short, no. A 5-yr study showed that teenage dieters had twice the risk of becoming overweight, compared to non-dieting teens (Neumark-Sztainer 2006). Notably at baseline the dieters did not weigh more than their non-dieting peers, which is important, because if the dieters weighed more, it would be a confounding factor, (which would implicate other factors, rather than dieting, such as genetics). The twin study also showed dieting independent of genetics is linked to wt gain.

What a great and informative video, especially since we live in a diet obsessed society. Dieting is not the answer..Susanne Bracy, LMFT

This video is amazing in getting the message across that dieting doesn't work.

Could it be that the kids who were more likely to be overweight were more likely to diet? So that it wasn't the diet causing the kids to gain but that easy-to-gain kids were more likely to diet?

I know diet doesn't work, and that your body will fight weight loss at the biological level in a way it is more often than not impossible to resist. However, I do wonder if these studies are reflecting something different. Maybe the people were not gaining weight because they were dieting, but dieting because they were prone to weight gain. Maybe they would have gained the weight whether they dieted or not. And the control group who did not diet, did not gain weight-- not because they didn't diet but because they weren't prone to weight gain. If someone is not worried about their weight, of course there is no reason to be on a diet.
