He's not faking it either when I went to music school this was something that we had to learn we had an ear training class this is a real skill that people possess

Many call this skill “relative pitch.” It’s something most music majors should be able to do.

i will use rainbow to try to explain how these works
Perfect pitch: i can see all the colours of the rainbow
Relative pitch: i'm colourblind, but i know the next colour if you give me a reference (eg: this colour is red, so the next colour must be orange)
True pitch: i'm colourblind, but i've trained enough to be not fully colourblind, i can see only a few colour and for those that i cant see, i use my "relative pitch" to know the next colour
i feel like this is the easiest way for people to understand how this works

Ask him why he remembers the note is Eb
Me: because I have perfect pitch

If it is learned it's relative and generally is more mentally taxing. Whereas perfect pitch is instinctual.

If you can Just remember Notes Thats a relative pitch. But if you can figure out instant the sound of any object Thats perfect pitch.

Bailey's brother used to swear that he had pp. I knew that he didn't, because he would hit a note or two and associate the key he was hearing with what he played. EXTREMELY GOOD relative pitch. I have pp. All you need is relative pitch. Pp can be a pain in the neck. I have trouble reading transposing instruments.

He has relative pitch. Not the same as perfect pitch

Edit: sorry I just realized the title of the short 🤦‍♂️ I’m stupid my bad

There are a couple of ways he could be doing this, my guess is that it's a mix of remembering how the note relates to others that you know, and knowing the instrument to the point that you can guess the note by the timbre of the sound. I bet this would be way harder to do with just a sin wave

LOL, it is called the "Instrumental pitch". He only knows the notes of the instrument he plays. He can not sing out a note on demand and he can not identify the sound of the moving car out side. He also can not identify other instruments either.

Thats true pitch which is the ability to know the notes based of memory compared to perfect pitch which is knowing what the not is not memory based so still very impressive

Her- Have you got perfect pitch?
Him- No.😐
🎹 Eb, 🎹 D, 🎹 B, 🎹 F#, 🎹 Bb
Me- Either you don't know what having perfect pitch is, or you're very modest. 🤔

The thing is, anyone can get those notes. I'm not a musician and I got them. It's just obvious.
