Why You Should Do an Apprenticeship (Instead of Going to University)

Hey All - I Hope I could provide a good insight into the two of the options that people have when leaving school - whatever you decide, you might need some new equipment so as always I'll leave my setup below :)

I was meant to be studying graphic design this year, but after I put a lot of thought into it, I realised it just wasn't worth taking out a huge loan in something I could do as a hobby, and the worst part is that you are not even guaranteed a job after completing the course.

Eventually came to the conclusion that I would rather take another year in college, study carpentry, get some experience and eventually start an apprenticeship in the field of trade.

The funniest thing is that I will only be spending £30 on the course, but even then my chances of starting a career are higher than if I had a degree.

The way I see it, if you're going to University, you should only really be studying academically advanced course such as medicine, engineering, science etc. More creative subjects are just a con so universities can make more money.

In the last few years the Level 7 Solicitor apprenticeship has been introduced into law firms. If you are wanting to study law I would recommend having a look into it, uni isn’t the only route you have to take now.

Definitely seeing the move away from traditional GCSE -> A-Levels -> Uni requirements within my workplace! I definitely wish I'd of thought about it more after leaving school

Dude what you are talking here is so true - I am 27 and have been working full time since I left school at 18 and started as an apprentice in I.T - although my apprenticeship employer wasn't able to offer me a job after my apprenticeship ended I was able to get back into work swiftly - having 12 months of experience and a few qualifications like MCTS Windows 7, CompTIA A+ and a few NVQs helped alot and when I looked up the cost of private training for the exams I did it was alot, and all of that was funded by the skills funding agency from the government which comes out of the taxpayer

Some people ask me would you do the same thing in hindsight and I would instead of going to uni, even though dealing with the isolation effect and being away from friends who went to uni was tough I still think apprenticeships are a good thing to do

There are some really cool apprenticeships that actually pay for your tuition fees part time degree related to their role. I have a friend that is doing one 🤞🏾 personally I value experience over theory, but blending the two I think will improve job prospectus greatly.

it really depends on what your trying to go for, but I want to go for electrician and if you want to get into the union, it is a must to stand out as much as possible so they will start training for you so getting SOME school would help but definitely not go for a degree
