I'm German and I just realised, that this is considered complaining and not smalltalk

If a German person says, “No complaints” when you ask them how their day went, they had a truly wonderful day!

Being german, this makes me realize how much I complain. I don't mean to, it's just a way of conversing with people. It's how I grew up. I have to rethink this whole thing now. Thanks for making me aware.

My german friend once went to a park attraction where they put bunch of beautiful and unique lightning and lightworks. His opinion? "I don't want to see the electric bill for all of this"

Of course, for complaining you need also a lot of inner anger. As the Bundeswehr joke goes: "A German soldier doesn't tremble from the cold, but from anger that it's not colder..." ;-)

Her German really has gotten very good! It's nice to see her speaking it so confidently now.

As a German, I have to complain: there’s no water waste in a fountain because the water circulates in a loop. It’s an energy waste because a pump runs all day to circulate the water. Every German would know that.

I used to teach German in India for some time, and when we came to the part where you talk about health/illnesses, I couldn't stress enough to my students how important it is to be able to complain about health issues and the weather... and how the weather either caused your health issues or is making them worse... because it's very important to be able to bond with colleagues and such.

They were looking at me so dumbfounded, they just couldn't believe it lol

Disliking something sometimes brings people closer together than liking something ever could 😅

When someone say's "I can't complain", they aren't trying very hard.

That's why "kann man nicht meckern" and its variations are the highest compliment a German genuinely gives

Nothing has made me understand my German grandparents more than this video 😂 I always wondered why they were like that!!

This truly is the core of the German identity. A woman in the bus today wanted to bond with me over the children being to loud and "it's the fault of the mother for letting them do everything they want". I didn't know her at all. But that is the most German experience ever. Every stranger suddenly becomes an extrovert when there is something to complain about together.

As an American of German descent, this explains A LOT about my older family members

Wow, maybe I’m part German. Complaining comes so naturally to me.
