China launches 2-day military drill around Taiwan

China annexed the island during the Qing dynasty and then china lost it to Japan in the late 19th century, then when it released by Japan back to china 1945. At this time, China was ruled by Chiang Kai-Shek. Not too much later, the PRC came to prominence in China, and eventually a civil war broke out between the PRC lead by Mao Zedong and the ROC (lead again by Chiang Kai Shek). As we know now, the PRC eventually took control of mainland China and the ROC fled to Taiwan and set up an essentially governement in exhile.

In short, the island of Taiwan had been part of China since 1683 when the Qing Dynasty annexed it into China, then Japan invaded the island to form a colony, and then the island was surrender BACK to China at the end of WWII.

The reason why the PRC views Taiwan as rightfully part of China as a whole is because essentially the PRC won the civil war but instead of surrendering, the ROC fled to an island and just said “ok you can have mainland China, but this island is now OUR new country”.

I’m NOT saying I’m 100% in favor of all of China and its policies, HOWEVER its important to understand the viewpoints of BOTH sides and the HISTORY of the situation to form your own opinion on the matter.
