Today I want to share something very helpful that will help correct forward head posture.

Forward head posture is when a person isn’t pushing their whole body forward but they hold their head past the midline of their body.

Every inch your head goes forward, there is a tremendous amount of tension added to the upper part of your neck. A problem with the upper part of the neck can lead to all sorts of different issues.

Forward head posture may cause:
• Headaches
• Insomnia
• Neck pain
• Dizziness
• POTS
• Stiffness
• Constant tension

Compression injuries to a person’s head, such as falling on your head or having something fall on your head, can cause forward head posture.

Tailbone injuries and whiplash injuries can also cause forward head posture. Even sitting behind a desk at a computer for long periods can lead to this issue.

How to fix forward head posture:
1. The Jefferson curl
Step 1. Curl your head forward as much as possible
Step 2. Curl your mid-back forward and start to touch your toes, bending your lower back
Step 3. Over time, hold weights to help increase the flexibility and strength of your spine

2. Use a cervical traction device
• Use this device about a half hour before bed for 5 to 10 minutes

3. Do neck strengthening exercises
• Get on all fours and do extension-type exercises
• Get on your back and do flexion-type exercises

Yes I’ve had multiple compression injuries working construction. They weren’t too severe at the time but as I age I feel the pain and tension a lot more. I have been using a traction device for about a year. Simply amazing…after 10 minutes of hanging out I can literally fall asleep most times still with the head suspended.…so relaxing. Thanks Dr. Berg.

Thank you doc. I have this exact problem, never found this specific topic. Will start the treatment. The reason I got this was studying at home at my desk with wrong posture.

The C curve neck is responsible for so many functions and once you lose it, it can become a disease process if not reversed. I have successfully reversed mine through diligent exercises, traction, strengthening, and working on posture. I had a tailbone injury as a kid falling down the stairs and knocking the wind out of me, whiplash from car accident as a teenager and a head forward posture from my job as an adult. Add to that i'm very tall and lanky, weak connective tissue and developed cervical radiculopathy, stenosis, pinched nerve, elevated heart rate, insomnia, gastroparesis, brain fog, anxiety, and lost the use of my hands with searing burning pain, could not make fist, or turn my head, for about four years at the end of it. No wonder they call it "the arc of life." it really is because now that I have gotten my curve back, I have gotten my life back. I could barely move and function. It's possible if anyone is struggling. After my doctor saw my x-ray (arthritis at every level in the neck, military straight, bone spurs in the front) he said it was inevitable and from the aging process. I didn't accept that and went to work. The hard part was figuring out all the symptoms originated from the neck, and the process of reversal relieved my symptoms almost immediately when I started teh work on my neck.

I was in an car accident 33 years ago, got whiplash, and did not seek medical help. Needless to say, I have back pain to some extent, every day. I have done the forward stretch of the neck because I felt relief. I will try the rest of the stretch, going all the way to my ankles. Thank you.

I appreciate this. In yoga we call the forward bend you demonstrate Uttanasana. If you stay in it for a while it will lower heart rate and lengthen the spine - as well and stimulate the parasympathetic nervous center
I always guide people to roll up very slowly one vertebrae. at a time Your work helps me to continue to grow learn and see if from another perspective - Thank you

I had a fall and landed on my head in 2019, and my wife actually broke her neck from an accident in 2012. Thank you for the advice. As always it makes sense.

Concussion in 2009. Whip lash in 2012 AND tailbone fracture in 2012. I use my at home cervical traction unit, stretch daily and use inverter 3-5 times a week. Darn, I've experienced all three! Thank You Dr. Berg for all of your knowledgeable, informative, to-the-point, helpful videos. I do appreciate them.

I've had all three of these injuries at differing degrees. The worst was a whiplash injury from an mva in my early 20's. I wake with a headache or migraine 3-4 days a week secondary to my neck pain and stiffness. Thanks so much for this video!

I've had whiplash twice from 2 auto accidents. The first was from being hit head on and the second was from being rear ended. I'm definitely going to try these suggestions because I suffer from insomnia, headaches and stiffness.

My most sincere THANK YOU, Dr. Berg. I have been a Martial Arts Instructor (Shotokan Karate) for 51 Years and have practiced the biomechanics of falling to the ground safely (Ukemi Waza) throughout those years. Nonetheless, after decades of this process I have developed a forward head posture due to falling to the ground literally thousands of times. What has occurred is something like an "Over Use" sports injury. Your kind info on the home therapy techniques have been quite helpful to me, and once again You have my heartfelt Thank You.
