Glute activation for runners. This short pre-run glute activation routine is perfect for a short warm-up before your next run. If your physiotherapist has told you that you need to strengthen your glutes and learn how to use your glutes when running, this set of glute exercises for runners will be ideal for you.

When it comes to learning how to use your glutes for running, the first step is for you to be able to activate your glutes in isolation during focused exercises such as the squats and mobility exercises in the glute activation routine. These are also great exercises for you to use before a glute strengthening workout.

It important to not only focus on your gluteal muscles, but also work on hip flexor mobility. The first exercise in this running glute activation routine combines conscious glute engagement with isolated hip flexor stretching. You should not be static stretching before running, so instead we’re turning this hip flexor stretch into an active mobility exercises with a contract-relax focus.

Follow these glute activation exercises before your next run to engage your glutes and run using your gluteal muscles.

Great little video James, something I'm trying to do a lot of at the moment prior to running. Appreciate it.

Thanks for the video. ITBS brought me here as I've been doing the Strength Running strengthening rehab alongside other core home workouts, and I saw your advice in your other video yesterday explaining that stretching and glute activation is important to accompany that. I do find that if you just jump straight into trying glute bridges (for example), it's difficult to actually get that activation and feel the muscle working. Even more so if you just warm up and then head out for a run.

I really do think the "sweet science" isn't boxing. It is running. Run too much & you may end up quitting early. Run less & you may not finish the distance. There is a "sweet spot" you need to reach & this differs per individual. You need to find your own "sweet spot" & that is what makes it a "sweet science." Recovery time is also a sweet science bec everyone recovers differently.
