I wasn't even aware that the Face Refinement tool had gone through such a dramatic enhancement. Thanks so much for putting this together for us.

That planar face tracker is pretty quick and certainly accurate enough. Beyond fixing textures, one of the salient problems — usually for faces — is how digital cameras tend to desaturate the shaded portions of faces. I recall being in a projection room in LA, where we showed the senior staff at Arri, an A/B comparison wipe of the dimly-lit faces in the interior (cabin) scene in "Hateful Eight". The A side showed the Panavision capture, and the B side the Alexa 65. While the film capture was very grainy it was deep, rich and colourful ; the Alexa's output was very clean but essentially grey. The colourist was saying "At least with the film I have something to hang on to — I can tweak the shade ; with the Alexa I have nothing". This was a while back and it's entirely possible that Harald Brendel subsequently tuned the AWG profile to better render dimly-lit flesh tones ; the rendition of the Alexa 35 is certainly superior to that era's tech. But if you look at the lady in the car, it's pretty clear to me that the shading on her face, while holding colour, is rather dull. All this to say that beyond tweaking the LUT itself such that dark flesh tones have more 'plenitude' one could use the planar tracker to generate a mask, which then would be intersected with a luminance mask, to focus on the shading. A laborious and costly path, no doubt, but a worthwhile one to consider for an equally expensive money shot — say for a commercial or a scene with an A-list actor. I designed a dedicated tool for this, which is shelved somewhere — it worked purely in colour space, so no tracking required, but it was tricky to use : By working in the colour domain you have less control over the morphological (spatial) effect, but you have high colour consistency. Working in the spatial domain you have more control over the gradient, etc. No one says it's easy ;-) but this sort of attention to detail is par for the course when you're doing pro work. To round up the topic I'll mention that how you treat the shade on faces is as old as oil painting itself and by itself a serious artistic topic ; you can use the sfumato technique of our forebears, as you can go wild and do Fauvism. Endless fun, no doubt.

Oh wow! Had been struggling for so long with getting the old refinement tool to improve faces to what I wanted, I almost gave up and hadn't considered the latest version was any better. Your video changes everything! Thanks Darren!

This is brilliant. I didn't read the release notes carefully enough! While FR worked well for me in interviews, it was sometimes broken in narrative work. I would find zooming in on a previous node could help get a better track. Now this tool can be used in any type of work.

Great stuff, thanks Darren! Glad it’s now usable, bailed out on the first version after struggling no make it look natural. And thanks for being the crazy man walking round Brighton with an OP3, I’m sure people got out of your way quite quickly..

You are totally correct in that the update is fantastic. The problem I have had is with a talent whose hair is almost the same color of the skin so a lot of the hair is part of the face. So far I have been able to manipulate it to better get just the face. Great tutorial Darren!!

I forgot about the side lighting feature they added to the tool. That's huge for a less processor intensive "Relight" feature that might need to shape the contrast of someone's face. I remember having to fix that type of thing a few years ago for a long talking head piece. Not the most fun in the world, but it would've been significantly easier with this. Excellent stuff as always Darren!

Thank you so much for doing such an in-depth review of Face Refinement, Darren! The tool has certainly improved massively in Resolve 19 and would definitely save a lot of time compared to the traditional route or Power Windows and manual corrections. Thank you, again!

Fantastic video. Ive never needed facial refinement or at least I didn't think I did, I am very excited to take my work to the next level and thank you for clear and detailed explanations and examples of how each adjustment works.

Absolutely brilliant tutorial to follow along with my own clips. Although I've used the free version of DaVinci Resolve for some months I decided to get the Studio version and your videos, Darren, are absolutely brilliant particularly for someone like me. Subscribed and looking forward to more excellent content Darren. Many thanks.

It only took me one try to break the face refinement tool. hahaha... Thanks for the continued tips on making great colour grading choices. I'm still learning to dial it all back and be more subtle.

Great video, yes 😁 a second in-depth video. It's a tool that I love and as you say, just with this tool the studio version is worth it. It saves an incredible amount of time and has so many possibilities.... It would be nice to see more practical examples of how you use it on a daily basis.

Great video as usual. It would be nice if BMD added a little on/off switch to each of the sections of the Beauty Advanced tool. Maybe v. 19.1 !
