𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮

Infamously associated with Nietzsche, this quote is at all not said by Nietzsche. But it sounds very Nietzchean, specifically if you have read:
1. On the Genealogy of Morality
2. Beyond Good & Evil.

When we talk about morality, it always goes hand in hand with ethics; good vs evil, right vs wrong, normal vs abnormal, etc. It is something that is metaphysical and considered to be a virtue. Morality is not always about beauty.

We can’t see morality but it exists & connects with our day to day life. For instance, I consider cigars as a bad thing but some may. The cigar itself is not the morality, but the good-bad perspective of cigar is.

When something is not aligned with our perspective, we tend to conclude that it is amoral, abnormal, & crazy. In fact, our perspective about something is influenced by the aesthetic variable, whether you realized it or not.

It's a very complex thing.

Historically, humans have long associated aesthetic beauty with moral goodness. In ancient Greece, for example, philosophers like Plato equated beauty with virtue.

Even today, we often unconsciously attribute positive characteristics to those who are conventionally attractive, a phenomenon known as the "halo effect."

The cockroach and the butterfly serve as perfect examples of this dynamic. The cockroach, with its association with filth, disease, & dark environments, is seen as ugly & disgusting. The butterfly, on the other hand, is delicate, colorful, & floats gracefully.

If we follow the logic of intrinsic moral worth, shouldn't all life forms, regardless of their outward appearance, be treated with the same level of respect?

However, this is rarely the case in human societies, where moral judgments are deeply subjective and influenced by contextual, cultural, & personal factors.

Remember colonial era?

Remember what Britishers used to say to Indians for being brown & poor? It all makes sense now.

Depends here. If u crush a cockroach outside your home, for no litral reason, then this may work, other wise no because cockroach in home is considered as pest and spreads diseases, mean while butterfly genrally doesn't interfere too much in people's daily life.

To add on to the moral confusion, consider why the aesthetic preference of the butterfly over the cockroach exists.

The cockroach represents unhealthy environments. A cockroach infested home is a gross dirty neglected place. You should be repulsed by the cockroach because you should be repulsed by the environment the cockroach seeks. Even if we go back to tree dwelling origins. The cockroach is in damp rotting places that lack structural support and increase the risk of infection.

The butterfly cannot stand high winds, rain, or snow. It is a pollinator. It follows and lives off of new growth. The corridors that butterfly migrate across are naturally good farm land by the same weather mechanisms.

Preferring the butterfly over the cockroach is a survival mechanism. Those that avoid the cockroach are avoiding unhealthy environments. Infestation is an innate disgust in humans.

Cockroaches are necessary for the environment, my house is NOT their environment. Butterflies don't harm or annoy you, and they're cleaner.

actually no, butterflies are very important for our ecosystem . if there decreases butterfly population in a particular area, pollination stops and decreases flora diversity, which is harmful for environment and in severe cases may contribute to further decrease in population of other flora or fauna species dependent on it . hence the phrase BUTTERFLY EFFECT is used .

cockroach spread diseases while butterflies does not cause harm to humans.

Back when I was around 6 y.o, I saw a beautiful butterfly landing on a rock near my newly built house. I don't know why but my first instinct was to crush it by throwing rocks at it a few times. And so I did just that while standing beside my parents who were talking with a guy, I felt a sense of regret yet also kinda proud and amazed by how it looks after it dies. Thinking back at it now, I kinda feel bad for that beautiful butterfly
