I remember civ 5 when wonders were “congratulations you win” good

The temptation is to go Researcher first with Pingala in a science game... but I would argue for Connoisseur. The early boost to Culture help you pick up your next Governor promotion... but it is crucial to get to Recorded History as fast as possible.

One time, in a TSL Germany game I got the pantheon that gives you +2 to production from marshes, as well as the wonder that gives marsh tiles +2 science. Now, the real kicker is, if you settle Aachen (the tsl start) you get the lowlands, which are all marshes. If you then settle Hamburg, you can slurp up all the North Sea coast marshes, which is like 8 tiles if I remember correctly. Essentially, 3/3 on food and production, with 2 science thrown in. Unfortunately, when I got that I had no idea how to play the game so my Hansas were pretty bad, but I still won because you can get the boosts I described extremely early in the game leading to a snowball

It's basically impossible to play this game casually the way I've done the previous three versions.

Not bad video, but I expected you would cover the best factions for science victory and how strategy changes for them.

Especially for Korea, since their campuses work different

I find that it's very rare for me to get a science victory just because I tend to get some other victory type (usually diplomatic) by the time I hit the atomic era. It's been my goal to get a science victory before that happens. For the most part, I follow the tips in this video, though I find it really hard to rush the early wonders. Etemenanki and the Great Library almost always get claimed by the AI while I'm focusing on getting my settlers out. Also, I always seem to miss out on Hypatia.

I guess the thing I'm doing wrong is, while I'm prioritizing science, I'm not really comfortable prioritizing it at the expense of, say, sending out another settler or building that sweet +4 Harbour with a lighthouse in my coastal city. As such, while I can usually be the science leader in a game by the renaissance or so, I'm generally pulling ahead of everyone else a little too late to really get my space program underway before the atomic era (and sure, I can always just disable the diplomatic victory or vote for losing proposals in the World Congress, but that seems cheap to me).

Weirdly enough, I find my best science games are the ones where I'm super-aggressive. It's cheaper to buy military units to capture cities with campuses than it is to build campuses, I guess. Also, I don't have to worry about rushing wonders if I can just capture them.
