"We buy things we don't need, with money we don't have, to impress people we don't like." -- Common sense

100% correct. Proof: I've never seen Warren Buffett rocking a Louis Vuitton purse.

Wealth Is Quiet. Rich Is Loud. Poor Is Flashy.

I dress Vintage. Like old Hollywood vintage. Yes brands existed but not to the extent where everyone wanted to buy it. Look at Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Phil Harris, Bettie Page, etc. They all had snazzy clothes but not a single brand tag in sight. Classy doesn't have to be loud.

Honestly, I don't buy anything with branding. Even before it became widely known, I couldn't understand why anyone would pay money to be a walking billboard. It just didn't make sense to me to pay hard earned money to provide free advertising to these companies.
I don't mind paying for quality where it counts, but often you can find products that are just as well made, for a fraction of the price. You just have to be willing to put in the work to comparison shop.

They don't prey on the poor, they prey on the stupid.

This is exactly why I'm leaning more and more into saving and investing versus spending on things that bring temporary happiness

This is very accurate. I bought all these things when I was poor. Now I’m making good money and I don’t care for these brands

you're so on point, foolish people think the brand is a big deal. it's not!! thank you for your truth.

I married into an upper class family and they definitely do wear designer but it’s a sport for them to get it discounted

This is ESPECIALLY true in the cosmetic industry!!! The ingredients are not worth $100+ in those proportions, but because people can't pronounce them, it performs, & the colors are good enough, they think they're getting a good deal!

thirty years ago (before the surge of Asian sweatshops) luxury brand items meant really high quality made by skilled craftsmen. but that was a long time ago.

But they're not "Preying on the poor", That's a stretch. No one is forcing you to buy luxury items.

They realize that everyday normal people have an extreme desire to "fit in" or be the "it person" so they capitalized on that stupid belief that people need things to feel important. When what they really need is therapy.

Thank you for this. We don’t have to “look” rich, to be rich. I’ve seen practical cars parked in front of million dollar homes and witnessed people pulling up to churches in Mercedes requesting food and gas cards. Don’t let your eyes deceive you.

I buy designers glasses because my head is big and the generic brands never seem to fit. It’s the one luxury brand I purchase

I figured this out when I first started working 30 years ago. I felt that since I finally made some money I would splurge on an expensive ($300) purse. I didn't make much money at the time so that was a big expense for me. I soon realized the joy of that buy didn't last very long and the remorse of spending that much money so stupidly lasted much longer. I never did that again.
