Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook has launched the company's first retail store in India, in its financial capital, Mumbai.

Videos showed Mr Cook waving to customers and opening the store's doors as employees clapped and cheered.

Mr Cook will also attend the opening of a second store in the country’s capital, Delhi, on Thursday.

But why has Apple chosen to launch in India now?

When anything good happens in India. BBC start to question it.

Apple's market share in the Phillipines has never gone below 10% since 2010 (compared to India's 4%) and yet we have to deal with sub-par service from Apple Authorized Resellers. Congratulations India for finally getting an Apple store! Love from the Philippines!

If apple can achieve upto 8% market share in india(from current 4%), that would mean 120million apple users from india. This would become among the topmost revenue generator countries for apple after US and China.
The only thing apple needs to do to tap the indian market is to slash prices comparable to uae/us prices and offer lucrative deals on purchase of more than 1 items. Such offers/deals and slashing of prices etc would definitely help apple reach 8% and beyond in market share of india.

Actually government restricted Apple from opening stores in india. According to law, MNCs can't open their retail stores until they locally manufacture 30% of their products sold in india.

People in the comments have an incorrect assumption about india. They are ranked 5th in the world in terms of gdp so their purchasing power is extremely strong

Q: "Why has Apple launched its first store in India?"
A: Because in the past 1-2 years Apple has kept losing market share across the world as more and more consumers are (FINALLY) waking up to the fact that with Apple products you are pretty much always paying a premium for last years hardware

Lets face it, Apple managed to coast on their "sheeple" customer base for much longer then most people guessed they would, but these days reality is finally catching up with them, they dont have anything noteworthy to offer anymore, the actually good Apple that they once were that used to innovate and care for its customers is long gone (RIP Steve..) and these days the "better ecosystem" isn't really a valid argument anymore either (since Google & Microsoft have gone to great lengths to support each-other)

Apple will keep losing market share, giving one of their markets a little extra attention by opening official stores isn't going to change much. I highly doubt the average Indian person prefers some status symbol phone with its own standards (for charging etc) over some other phone with more features/faster hardware & actual common standards, for less money?... Especially considering the different economy that means they will likely use their phones for longer compared to the average person in "the west".
