I have a bicuspid heart valve with a heart murmur. For most part I have followed Canada's food guide quite well and believed I ate better than most people eating lower salt and lower fat, eating breakfast starting at 6am with small meals every few hours (about 5-6 meals)as was recommended by trainers the gym. Although I have always exercised /worked out since I was a teen, my endurance was always poor. I got fatigued quickly and my muscles would just give up with lactic acid. My heart would beat so hard I could feel it in my ears . My heart rate would take a long time to come back down all whilst breathing like an obese person. I also had arthritis for most of my adult life and religiously took glucosamine chondroitin supplements daily to ease pain.
In 2017 I fell ill for about a month from faulty dental work which was hard to diagnose . I went through many diagnostic tests, one of which discovered the source of my heart murmur. It was from having a odd genetic defect (bicuspid) with my heart valve which was beginning to show buildup of calcification. I was given the grim news that in a few years I would most likely need to get the valve replaced with a pig valve or some kind of synthetic. Either of which would require me to be on immune suppression meds for the rest of my life.
2020 rolls in with a pandemic and I feel like a bag I hot garbage . Like most people I started watching more Netflix. I happened upon a documentary called "what's with wheat" . I stopped eating gluten just for fun and wow! I started feeling really good. Shortly after I discovered dr. Erik berg, dr. Jason Fung and dr.Stan Ekberg. I started following some of the their advice and I was amazed at how quickly my health, my body and my mind changed.
For many people these past 2 years were the worst in their lives. For me they have been the best. All because I took a chance and got away from listening to traditional doctors and the false beliefs that they perpetuate.
These YouTube doctors who create these videos have helped so many people for free. Thank you for all you have done!
It's 2022, I'm still rocking the same shitty heart valve with a resting heart rate under 60 bpm and my arthritis is gone. I could go on for hours but it's suppertime and it's my one and only meal for the day..
..can someone please pass me the salt?

This is the best explanation I've ever heard about why low salt is bad for you.

I used to never put salt on my food out of fear of heart disease. How I was wrong!! Now I liberally salt everything (also I put nutritional yeast for potassium).
Makes everything taste soooo much better, I have more energy and less hunger 🤣😂😍
Since being strict keto I'm down 25lbs. Honestly the best lifestyle!

One thing that's so difficult with nutrition and health outcomes/mortality studies is that there are so many variables to consider besides dietary intake, which Dr. Fung touched upon here. But knowing the importance of quality salt for health, which is supported by thousands of years of written historical data, and a WHOLE food diet, maybe what we need is just a health dose of common sense more than studies. Thanks Dr. Fung for your grounded wisdom.

My doc is always telling me to cut salt out of my diet. I've been trying to tell him otherwise, but it may be easier to just ignore him.

All my mother's life she was told she needed to reduce her salt intake as she was told she had hypertension. She went on blood pressure meds, along with all the meds to counteract the side effects of said blood pressure meds: diuretics, etc. She ended up with type II diabetes and went on meds for that. Over the decades she was always thirsty, carried water around with her wherever she went. Fatigue also plagued her. In the last decade of her life, she was diagnosed with an enlarged heart and congestive heart failure. She died at the age of 74. All because she kept her salt very, very low and ate carbs like crazy. Her own mother, on the other hand, added salt liberally and ate a far more traditional diet, and was never on any medications. She died of natural cause at the age of 92. Go figure 🤷‍♀

This makes so much sense. Been on a high salt diet as long as I can remember and still don’t have high blood pressure (I’m mid 40s). I’ve always been yelled at to lower my salt intake (by parents, doctors, other family members) but I just love my salt too much 🥰. In recent years I started to try lowering my salt intake because I was getting scared about maybe getting high blood pressure if I don’t cut back, but now looks like I don’t have to.

Thank you Dr. Fung. You are a Saint and you're saving lives. No only has your videos on food and Insulin been extremely enlightening; I've been fearful of consuming and adding salt to for for 20 years thinking that it would increase my blood pressure. Now I'm adding a little Himalaya salt without fear.

Totally ignored statin prescribed for cholesterol, trying hard to be LCHF. Hoping to lower my Hga1c. Dr Fung was the very first doctor that I watched on YouTube. Thank you Dr Fung, please continue making more educational videos on YouTube.

I walk 3 hours every morning while fasting(OMAD). First thing I do when I get home is heat up 1to2 cups of chicken bullion, add lots of pink Himalayan salt, and drink it. After my salty drink I feel great and would go on and eat my one meal for the day. I am 57 and never felt better. Thank you Dr for all your advice.

I spent years listening to this and it took a the last year of saying 'test me' to finally find out my sodium levels were fine. I'm sick of the way most doctors just repeat what they have been taught instead of testing to be sure.

Thanks. My grandmother lived into her 90s. She ate very high fat breakfasts and a moderate lunch and no dinner. She ate salt with every meal.
