UW Medicine is using spinal stimulation to restore function in patients with spinal cord injuries — improving their quality of life after spine surgery. After living with a spinal cord injury for over a decade, Jon immediately began to recover function in his hands after undergoing spinal stimulation in conjunction with physical and occupational therapy.

Dr. Chet Moritz, a neuro engineer at UW Medicine, and his team have seen similar remarkable results using this neurotechnology to restore function. In fact, they have found spinal stimulation improves muscle strength and hand/arm function even many years after injury or spine surgery — and that recovery of function persists even without stimulation for up to six months after treatment.

Before being treated with spinal stimulation, Jon could barely move one of his hands and the other only had limited movement. Today, he is back to the hobbies he loves, including playing the guitar.
