In this video, I explain what happens and why growing tomatoes from whole tomatoes works and how this can help you have better success in the home garden.

Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane - the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let's get into it! Cheers, Mark :)

G'day Everyone, just to let you know that I'm well aware of the "sliced tomato" videos. What I'm addressing in this video is why it works and what happens whether sliced or whole - I went the one step further for effect lol... The best way to grow tomatoes, in my opinion, is from collected seed (also shown in this vid) and then sow them individually because you can space them out easier for less disturbance when pricking out if required later for potting up or thinning out if already in location. Cheers :) www.selfsufficientme.com ;)

My father passed away last year.  I had planted a cherry tomato in his landscaping between several 3-4 hundred pound quarry stones.  I let this plant decline with its fruit last fall and low and behold I have a nice crop of new tomato's this year!  I hope to keep this going year after year, nice way to remember dad.

I love your videos. I'm a lifelong gardener so most of this stuff is known to me but your explanations are so good for those wanting to learn. The world needs more gardeners and you are helping with that. Well done.

Sacrificing tomatoes for views? This video is too graphic.

Now I know why I had little tomato shoots everywhere in my backyard! DUH!! My chickens loved eating tomatoes, and they often were allowed to roam freely in our (big) backyard. I could never figure out why they were able to grow without a problem in nature, while I myself planted seeds from tomatoes and the "plants" either came out as single twigs with 2 tomatoes on it (at most) or just didn't germinate at all. In other words, an utter waste of time. Figured out now the main reason why that was happening. THANK YOU. Gonna try your method from now on!!

Cheers!

I struggled for years with seeds. I grew from slices and WOAH!
A dozen strong plants made it to my garden in the spring. I'm going natural from now on! 😁🍅🍅

I learned a lot more about tomatoes in this video than in my entire senior high school year.

My Dad was so proud of his tomato plants. He always planted seedlings from green houses. This is a great way to start new plants if you can't buy seedlings. I will definitely be trying your method. Thank you for showing us how to plant tomatoes from tomatoes.

One of the rare videos that there's less talking, but more instructions! Thanks for the tip.

My wife accidentally hybridized cherry tomato and Roma tomatoes. They came out tasting better but they were oblong and 1/4 the size of a Roma.

Mark you are my favorite youtuber. You have inspired my wife and me to do so many new things in the garden. We will definitely be using this technique.

Mark, truly enjoy your videos and advice. I am in South Florida US so our climates are similar. Got my Egyptian Spinach and Rat tail radish growing well per your suggestions. Your fermentation technique worked great with my cantaloupes . Thank you very much for taking the time and providing such good information and clear instructions!

Volunteer tomato plants are always the best. Always find at least one growing elsewhere in the yard in the spring thanks to birds.

Mark, you bring me to my quite happy place. I lost the joy of gardening, more like I stop taking a curiosity approach to gardening. You bring back that joy.
