China's President Xi Jinping arrived in Moscow on Monday for his first visit to Russia since the war in Ukraine.

President Xi labelled Putin a "dear friend”, though in an article in a Russian newspaper insisted that China was "impartial" and has “actively promoted peace talks”.

The US has urged the world not to be "fooled" by Beijing's peace proposal, suggesting it was being issued on Russian terms.

What was the actual strategy behind the visit? And what role is there for China in brokering any peace?

Why there is a strong thought that Russia needs Chinese support especially regarding military supplies? It does sound weird. However I might understand this point of view. If Ukraine is getting ammo from NATO countries Russia has to receive ammunition from China - honestly this is absurd.

Russia is a major exporter of energy and minerals, while China is the factory of the world. The economies of Russia and China are highly complementary. Look at the energy crisis in Europe. Factories closed down in large numbers, and workers took to the streets after losing their jobs. Only the United States is gaining the war economy, and poor Ukraine has fallen victim.

Not sure of the Sino-Russian ‘strategy’. However, that China and Russia are cosying up, appearing to provide a balance to the West is inevitable.
