My dad has always grown big gardens and when I was little, he convinced me that the potatoes would run back into the ground if I didn’t catch them. He would tell me to get ready and then he would flip the dirt over to expose the potatoes and I would literally dive to “catch” the potatoes😂 He would be gassing me up the whole time too like “Get ‘em! Don’t let ‘em get away!”🤣

The berries are actually potato seeds. You can ferment the berries and harvest the seeds to plant!!! The berries look very similar to a tomato when you cut them open.

I let the potato berries to fully ripen. They produce True potato seeds. When you plant them the following spring you will grow new potato varieties!

Fun fact! if you let the berries mature, you can grow potatoes from seeds! Unlike like normal potatoes, they will be slightly mutated! so if you want to develop a new cultivar potato, growing them from seeds instead of mini potatoes is brilliant idea!

As well, potatoes need more water just prior to harvesting as that is when they plump up in size. This is Extremely Important.
Here in Northern Maine Potatoes have been the Main Crop for over 100 years. We know potatoes.

5 years back I did my first lot of growing potatoes for a customer, then he slowly added more things to plant as he got hooked on having home grown.

Ended up growing potatoes, carrots, corn, tomatoes, peas, onion and more. But as a typical elderly man, he was stubborn and wanted me to plant things when it was the wrong season and ignored my advice and saw multiple times I was right and asked "How do they know?" I bit my lip because I sarcastically was tempted to say "MAGIC"

BTW if you want your potato to have berries too, you can actually graft a tomato plant onto the stem of a potato plant and get tomatoes AND potatoes from the same plant :)

This can also be useful when your going just for the tomatoes as some kinds of potatoes have better or more resilient root systems that the kind of tomato you might want to be growing.

Ohhh but the young potatoes even before flowers have formed are so tender and sweet before the sugars turn to starch. I sneak my hand in by the stem and get a few off of each plant early! My favorite spring treat.

Just use a potato fork it makes digging for them much easier. This is much like a pitch fork only it has got blunt tips. You put the fork allongside one end or the side of te row and just sif the soil with your potato forks you'll be done so much faster as wit any other tool. This tool is specially made for this job.

There was a book that the author harvested seeds from potato plants, germinated and planted them. The seeds grew very different potatoes then what was harvested the previous year. Fingerlings and red, yellow and purple varieties grew
