This year, I plan to grow mine in containers, whether in buckets, tubs, cardboard boxes, or new grow bags. My potatoes got forked like crazy last year digging for them because the soil still had too much clay, even after amending it.

I have large containers, but I saw a few videos where this was done in cardboard boxes. They placed the boxes open ended, all flaps tucked inside, over a layer of leaves, straw, or dirt. The boxes were filled with about 6" soil, potatoes placed, a little more soil, then a heavy layer of mulch (leaves, straw). One farmer showed the progression and care, early pick, and regular pick. The harvest was amazing!

Another guy put chicken wire around his boxes for support and on the bottom to prevent moles, then weed cloth around so he could reuse them. I think weed cloth between the box and chicken wire would be better as the box deteriorates, the cloth contains the soil and that is supported by the wire. Anyway, there are so many alternatives with a little creativity for folks who can't afford new bags.

Oh my gosh I forgot I could do this, thanks for the reminder. I have way too many seed potatoes and probably not enough containers for all of them with my normal planting but doubling them up makes it doable!

Hey thanks for this vid! I live in Anchorage Alaska and am giving potatoes a try this year for the first time. This video has been very helpful. I planted 3 varieties in bags yesterday using your method and hope to have success!

"Determinate" means "restricted", as in restricted growth. Determinate potatoes only grow in one layer of the soil. Consequently, you can plant a couple of layers of Determinate potatoes in the same growing container. Typically (but not always) Determinate potatoes are the early cropping types, while Main Crop potatoes (which take longer to grow and are harvested later with larger size tubers) shouldn't be planted in layers, as each plant will produce tubers at many different layers in the soil. (I'm not writing this because I'm a Potato Expert, but because I always have to look this information up, so thought I'd share it with you.)

Thank you, Mr. Gary,
Sorry i havent been in comments for awhile,
I had a bad back surgery last year & caught SEPSIS, which thank goodness for my husband and older sons I survived, i was on IV Rocephin for 7 weeks,
Couldnt help in garden last year,
This year, I started our own seeds you taught me several years back, plus had another plant sale, which helped so many people, as the box stores are $5.97 .
We planted our sweet onions back in November here in Montgomery County, Texas, just harvested 317 onions and drying them in our barn area .
We are growing more then ever this year, Ive learned to ferment cabbage, kimchi, etc....its so good for you, only eating farm raised eggs, and even went in on a cow with our oldest son .
So glad w3 d8d it, as meat has went up badly .
We go to our farmers market and get our jersey A2 raw milk, heavy whipping cream every saturday.
God bless you & thank you for your amazing book, as well as Im still using your 2in pots and holders, so worth the money everyone ...plus his seeds germinated 100% on all products, and some are from 2022 .
Great teacher mr.gary .

I put sweet potato slips in watering buckets last year as an experiment. One to a bucket. They dried out fast because they were in intense sun and the plants didn't get very big. I really doubted it would work but only 1/14 died & 11 did very well.

It's a great pleasure to watch this video. Especially since I bought 20 buckets for potatoes. I can't wait to plant them.

I tried setting my fiber pots in kiddy pools to catch water as it drains through so roots can take it in between my watering if they need it

I've got four buckets (five gallon pickle buckets) set up with one potato per level, pretty much following your directions. Waiting very expectantly.

So timely - thank you! I went just a "wee" bit overboard on seed potatoes this year. 😁 This will help solve the problem-not-a-problem.
