Narcissists set you up for failure and you are not imaging things! They want to see you fail as a way to boost their narcissistic supply and again feel in control in a world they feel out of control in. How narcissists set you up is with gaslighting and other manipulation tactics that have you question your own thoughts and feelings. They will also use word salad and double bind communication. What is double bind communication? It is where the narcissists will produce a situation in which no answer you choose is right or good enough. The narcissist punishment tactics can then be used because no matter what, you will be wrong. The narcissist can twist this into how you are the problem and blame shift while showing a lack of responsibility taking. The grey rock method narcissist approach is the best approach in these situations. But first, you must realize the narcissist relationships are toxic relationships with emotional abuse. Then, you can understand double bind communication and that you never will do enough or be enough for the narcissist.

They can also use current events to bait you knowing how you feel about something. They will keep grinding away even when you politely try to change the subject. Then they will try to keep pushing. They are not trying to have a respectful conversation about current events, they are trying to upset you and cause you to react. If other people are around it is humiliating. If you are on the phone or something you can hang up on them and they will tell others that they can’t have a simple discussion with you about current events.
