Why Get Baptized?

Can someone help please with the Bible reference to this public declaration of baptism.

You cant use water baptism as a means for salvation your only showing other thats you surrendered to Jesus which is good but theres too many false teachers saying you have to be baptized in order to be saved which the thief on the Cross could tell you he never got the chance to but was saved due to his faith in Christ at the last moment.
