Honestly.... how INSANE is this log footage?

Apple has won me back after 10 years of Android with this. It's insane to know that the hardware hasn't changed, they've just given the option to bypass the awful processing (sometimes it's good but almost always overdone) and that this was technically possible all along. They should just change the standard video mode, or at least a "natural" option in the camera app to Apple log with a baked in rec.709 lut (or even a selection of luts) without the processing and then made into a regular size video file.

in my opinion the standard should be graded too for the right comparison!
With my old 13 pro max I used to decrease brightness and contrast, adjust the white balance and saturation and the result was a lot better than the straight out standard video!
I would say closer to log graded than standard that I've seen in this video!

Log is not a color space...a color profile includes a transfer function (like SLog3) + a color space (Sony uses S-Gamut). The log portion is controlling the gamma curve (which is a curve because its defined by a logarithmic function), which records the brightness information, which is why it's related to Dynamic Range (the brightest and darkest parts of the captured image). It is basically a way of compressing that luminance information.

Apple Log is using the Rec.2020 Color Space combined with their own Transfer Function. The image looks "flat" and "washed out" because it is compressing the tonal range of the scene into the limited bit-depth of the video file in a specific, reversible way. It's basically just encoding and decoding.

tldr - log affects luminance (brightness), color space affects chrominance (color).

Wow amazing. I love the S23 Ultra's video but the video on iPhone in Pro Res Log looks much better. This just shows that more resolution does not necessarily mean overall better video quality. Great work!!!

Absolutely amazing video. You must have put so much work into it! The most interesting thing for me is the h265 trick, that looks really awesome. Thanks a lot!

Great point with the skin tones. The transition from the light and dark parts of your skin was actually dramatically better on the Sony. Such a good creative tool for film makers and documentarians.

Most of the people on here have zero idea of log format and it’s intentional soft look to make it film like.

Subscribed ! Question(s). Can a 1tb iPhone 15 bypass the need to film with an SSD on the camera body and just off load the 1TB to the SSD when it’s full? And then you’d just need a 1tb iPhone and an attachment for an ND filter and use Blackmagic and internal LUT? If so I’m getting one today!

Yep you dont need the fancy 8k thing, and you only need is a bad-ass quality ProRes LOG

3:56 I am looking at the weather outside your window. It's so bleak ! Can you grade that into looking sunny ? Have had my 15 pro max for less than a week and I love that I now have log on my smartphone too. Log isn't new to me. Have been using it for 4+ years thanks to my fantastic Lumix S1 but it's great to have it on my 'B cam' too. Well done, Apple.

Hello Tom! Excellent video! I saw that you also have the S23 Ultra and would like to see a raw footage fight between it and the iPhone. Yes, the S23 also shoots in RAW, directly on the SSD, with support for all lenses, using the MotionCam app :)

So far I haven't found any comparison between these two features :/

I would still argue that the Sony Xperia 1 series rivals the iPhone and any other smartphone in video when we're talking about log amd editing. And still one of the few phones that shoot 4k120fps from all the rear lenses.

You're the only person who showed that you can shoot HEVC with the LOG profile.

nice vid, you should do a video rigging up the iphone 15 pro using shiftcam lenses, nd, mist filters, additional storage...

Any thoughts on manually grading LOG footage on the iPhone in the native Photos app? If you’re really running and gunning it could be really handy to grade one clip and then copy/paste other clips with the grade…
