Is the viewport any faster, when using a wacom pen and 3d mouse a few of us notice lag when a 2-3 million high poly mesh is selected and then try to move the view. Don't get this behaviour in Zbrush, Houdini, Blender, 3dCoat. Seems to be a Maya/Max issue with the viewport.

I think what dude was trying to say at 16:45 is that the algorithm that creates the topology for polygons when you do a Convert to Editable Poly from a non-polygon shape (spline) creates a better polygonal outcome than it used to. Previously it would create a very messy set of edges that sometimes overlapped each other and changed the shape in general causing unwanted visual abnormalities and other undesirable outcomes when converted (specifically obvious when you start to use modifiers to change the topology),  now the algorithm for converting the shape to polygons is much better and it creates a more streamlined polygonal object. Although it might be 'fixed',  this is an important issue to all users specifically if you're deforming or smoothing your object or even trying to understand the concept of edge loops,  just skipping this won't do you any favors because 3ds Max still does what it wants occasionally and you need to know how to work around that. It's still really important to - especially when converting something like splines to Editable Poly - assess or clean up the topology, which means look for abnormalities to adjust or remove,  and also be aware of redundant or unnecessary if you're planning on doing any deformations of that object.
