I should mention Amy Cuddy is an awesome researcher, and this video is not meant to shame her in any way. She doesn't just do power posing research, she does a bunch of other great psychology too, some of which I have cited on this channel in the past. Power Posing is just what she is best known for because of that TED talk, and well, she should probably let it go.

The IKEA effect is likely in play here. When you labor over something you love it more. She labored over Power Posing AND did that viral TED talk, which means Power Posing is likely part of her identity now. The IKEA effect plus identity makes letting go of old ideas very difficult. As a scientist, we should try to distance our identity from our findings, so that we can review them more objectively and be open to rethinking our positions. It's easier said than done though.

Thanks for an amazing first year on YouTube! I love making these videos for you guys. Because so many of you watch me, I have been presented with so many fantastic opportunities over the last year which would have never happened without your support. As a result, I am so SO grateful for each and every one of you, truly. Let's see what our second year brings us!

I definitely have found that it helps me before I give a speech, going to an interview, anything where I need to be up in front of people.

Your characterization of the topic is somewhat misleading. First, to call Cuddy et al 2018 "just a single paper" is not correct. It is a meta-analysis of 55 papers. It is also a direct response to critics who suggested using a robust new(ish) tool for better detection of effects (the p-curve). Cuddy et al expanded the sample and offered correctives to the critics- which those critics have never responded to, to my knowledge. Schimmack and Brunner (2017) also did a meta-analysis on the same studies as Cuddy et al 2018, this time using z-score based curving. They are critical of Cuddy et al, but still found an estimate of 30% replicability compared to Simmons and Simonsohn's 5%. Also, it is not the case that the field has achieved a consensus that the PP effects are fictional. Papers based on the effect in a wide range of circumstances have been published each year, including this one. (Schimmack & Brunner's paper is called Z-Curve: A Method for the Estimating Replicability Based on Test Statistics in Original Studies; see also discussion in "Average Power: A Cautionary Note" by McShane et al 2020)

I was taught about power posing in a professional development meeting on social-emotional health. (I'm a teacher) I had my class do power-poses a few times, but I never noticed an effect so I went back to deep breathing exercises pretty quickly. I would love to get your thoughts on some other strategies that can be used to lower cortisol levels in the short-term. Both for my students and for myself! Thanks for the awesome content.

Interesting arguments! I think power posing could be just one of the tips to overcome self-doubt, but as you said, not the ultimate magical solution to all our problems. Also, when doing power poses you gotta own it and be present in your body. If you only do the pose without embodying it, nothing happens. I also think if people have a belief that they don't deserve to be confident, a power pose can be contraproductive and they might feel worse, that's why we need to deal with our beliefs first. There's many layers to it

In my experience it does work.
+ What Cuddy prefers is "Fake it till you become it"
Thank you for your research, Pete.

Is it...
Pose like a superhero >> Serotonin increases
OR
Pose like a superhero >> Think of the possible success >> Serotonin increases
