10 Reasons You Have Too Much Clutter // In today’s world, our lives are increasingly cluttered. Everywhere we look, we’re surrounded by an overwhelming amount of stuff—whether it’s physical objects, digital notifications, or even responsibilities.

Our homes, in particular, are often filled with items we no longer need or use. The constant influx of new possessions, from clothes to gadgets, can create a disorganized space that feels crowded and overwhelming. This clutter can make it difficult to find things, increase stress levels, and impact our overall well-being.

Also, our schedules are often packed with commitments, leaving little room for relaxation or self-care. We juggle numerous tasks, from work deadlines to social obligations, which can make us feel perpetually busy and disorganized.

Understanding the reasons why this clutter accumulates in the first place can help you avoid bringing more of it into your life. The good news is that adopting habits for a clutter-free home and a simplified lifestyle can make a significant difference. By implementing minimalist habits, such as decluttering regularly and setting boundaries on digital distractions, we can regain control over our environment and reduce stress.

Living with less isn't just about getting rid of possessions; it's also about shifting your mindset. Embracing minimalism helps you focus on what's important, reducing stress and simplifying life. For beginner minimalists, it's crucial to take small steps, starting with basic habits for a clutter-free home and gradually building from there.

What’s the hardest area of your home or life to keep clutter-free?

Ha! Big houses. I live in the American South so in addition to the McMansions of my time there are quite a number of typical “southern mansions” scattered about. I remember driving my mother (who was born and grew up in a four room log cabin) staring at them as we drove by. I would think, “Wait for it. Wait for it.” Then sure enough she would say “I sure would hate to dust that house.”😂

"I think it's totally normal that things are not okay in your life" might be my new fav quote by you - because it's so true.
Wonderful new video. The topic of not letting go of inherited things and making it a problem for the next generations was very inspiring. Thank you for this ❤️

As a minimalist of almost 8 years, I found out that the only way to keep clutter from building up, is to not bring it in the first place. It took a few years, to figure that one out after constant declutterring.

An other thing is that I now have a rule just to buy quality items, that I can maintain for years, or if it doesn’t suit me, could be sold for some money back. I also have been thinking of buying most of my clothes secondhand, as the depreciation of new clothes is way too high. 😅

I have also forced myself to sell off all stuff I don’t use. It’s very time consuming, but on the other hand makes me think twice about what I bring into my life. 👍

I like you so much. I like the way you speak, the way you think, the way you live. I subscribed.

The garage and the barn. Those buildings are so full of my hubby’s stuff that he might “need” someday. We’re working on it, though.

I am 55 and have only been a minimalist for a few months..but it has changed my life. My wife doesn't understand why I am selling, donating and trashing so much. It's not so much a place in my home that is hard to keep clutter-free but the fact that I live w/ someone who doesn't see it as important.

Wonderful video. I live in Southern California in a small apartment that is surrounded by huge (huge!) houses. I have a daughter in high school and all of her friends live in these huge houses. It’s a very strange feeling to live in a small apartment amongst them. I struggle with the belief that her friends parents perceive us as inferior or “poor” when in reality I am a minimalist with no debt and they probably are in debt millions. It’s really weird here 🙃

Great video Steve!! The Swedish Death Cleaning is GENIUS!!! I think it's ever so valuable. My in-laws are in their upper 70's and my FIL has Parkinson's Disease and has limited mobility. We've mentioned to my MIL a few times about starting to pare back the "house treasures" (aka. clutter). She has no intent of ever doing that! In fact, it's as if she doesn't even SEE all of the things (clutter). She is a collector and has so many things of so many collections. She doesn't see the need to go through any of it before she and her husband pass. It makes me sad, first because us kids will be left to deal with the significant burden and second, they will miss out on the joy of going through things, handing down certain things, sharing why they are meaningful, relieving their children of a burden later. All the things.... I am thankful that I am Minimalizing now... I always keep in mind how it will be better for our daughter when the day comes that we pass.

I let go of many clothes items I was gifted by my family members. Today, actually, I declutter a shirt, it was a present. I did wear it once but it's just not my colour and style. I do feel a bit bad about decluttering gifts.

I appreciate a lot of your content - it does feel a bit formulaic, most topics from 2013-2016. But maybe there is nothing new to add to the topics. But i appreciate when you have good cinematic visuals.

Basic common sense can solve most of these problems, but it seems that common sense is in short supply. Buy needs, not wants, its that simple and keeps life less complicated.

Oh no! I do love empty spaces in my house! I would get rid of many more items but I'm married to a not-so-minimalist man 😂😂.
