US air base Al Asad in Iraq was targeted by Iran in response to the death of Qasem Soleimani, the top Iranian military commander, who was killed in a US air strike.

BBC Persian correspondent Nafiseh Kohnavard was allowed inside the high security base to see the damage and speak to soldiers who survived the attack.

The Iranian general in charge of the attack said publicly that the intention was to attack the military equipment, avoid casualties and inject fear. That’s why they gave advanced warming to allow soldiers to bunker down and spread out the timing of the missile attacks.

Iran does not want to kill US soldiers. They want to show the Americans that they are also capable of hitting back hard. And they used smaller payload in their arsenal. They gave enough of time for the US and Iraqis to vacate the place. Iran has some humanity in its heart. Well done. I am happy that no soldiers died of injuries. Any war is cruel.
