Russia now has a military base at the top of the world – on the remote archipelago of Franz Josef Land.

Now make a documentary about the US base in Al Tanf Syria "protecting" the oilfields from its rightful owners and smuggling oil while giving safe haven and training/weapons to terrorist groups.

Russia owns 53% of the Arctic coastline and 50% of the inhabitants of the Arctic are Russian. There is a perception in the West that Russia is increasing its footprint in the region. More accurately stated, it is modernisation and expansion of existing Soviet-era military facilities (note: on it's own territory). Much of the facilities in question host precious few troops and the infrastucture upgrades largely provides radar, search and rescue, meteorological and coast guard functions for the Northern Sea Route.

Fear mongering sells though. You wouldn't get a special report about the US revamping a military base in Alaska or Greenland.

The US has a military base in Greenland, outside its territory, and also in Iceland. And Russia cannot have a base on its own territory.

Hey look, Russia has a military base on their own territory, I guess that kinda unusual for Americans but I don't see the problem here.

Well to be fair if US can flex it's muscles in Indian waters in the name of freedom of navigation I guess Russians have every right to flex their muscle in Russian territory...
