How The Largest Surviving WW2 Military Base Was Shut Down | Camp Bastion | Spark

Camp Bastion, a fortress, built to fight the Taliban. For eight years the powerhouse for UK and US military operations in Afghanistan. Now, Britain’s biggest military base since WWII is closing. A town the size of Reading with a massive infrastructure – airport, hospital, fast food restaurants – is dismantled bolt by bolt and sent back to the UK. What is left is handed over to the Afghans. But with defences and manpower depleting daily, in the face of a constant threat from the Taliban, it is a dangerous race against time to close this city in the sand.

The reason why the Afghan commander looked disappointed when he said there were no integrated CCTV systems on the perimeter lookout towers, was because he can't even guarantee the loyalty of his own soldiers. If somebody were to let the Taliban through, they would have no early warning system.
In essence, the watchtower perimeter provided him no security.

I saw American equipment literally buried under the sands of Iraq. They said it cost too much to ship back to the states. You know the locals dug it up after we left. 🙄

What I remember most from my time in Afghanistan was whenever I served food in the cafeteria, I met other people. New recruits and veterans. It hits hard when you stop seeing them for good and know they either died or was injured and had to be discharged.

Well in hindsight I have to say the Brits made the right call, leaving nothing but bricks and mortar, because it's all been gifted to the Taliban without a fight.

8:23 the sound of the blast took approximately 6 seconds to reach the camera after detonation. The speed of sound is 340.29 meters per second. 6 times 340.29 meters is 2041.74 meters. Therefore the the distance from the camera to the blast site is approximately 2 kilometers away.

“Out of date ammo”, I know quite a few guys who would have no issues using that ammo.

The evacuation of a base while other bases are nearby was complex and dangerous. This shows how difficult evacuating the last base is.

Bruh, all Biden had to do was search "how to withdraw troops from Afghanistan" and watch this fairly short, but very detailed tutorial that the Brits where so kind to provide us.

I was working at Camp Leatherneck while they were downsizing in 2014. The marines were removing everything. They even removed the gravel road beds that kept the dust in check. Every piece of electrical wire that wasn't going back was cut into pieces no longer than six inches.
