Checking Transmission Fluid Level | Ford Escape, Fusion, Transit Connect, Explorer 4-Cyl

MORE INFO HERE: The check plug may be 14mm instead of Hex-10 on older models (2013-2016). When checking the fluid, leave the engine running and access the plug through the bottom of the car. With the fluid warm, there should be a slow trickle of fluid coming out of the plug. If its running out fast enough to spill on the subframe, its definitely overfilled. You can let it drain until at the right level (just watch until its level). If you need to add fluid, the easy way is to insert a transmission dipstick into the transmission vent up top (perfect fit). The vent is a little cap that has Mercon LV stamped on it.

Perfect. Exactly what I was looking for. Much thanks from Wisco.

That really sucks! What was Ford thinking not using a dipstick, that would be much easier. SHEESH!

Are we removing the plug while the engine is running, or when the engine is off with the transmission warm? I would wonder if the moving parts inside the tranny with the engine running would tend to kick some fluid out of the check hole.

How is this checking fluid level when you dont show the dipstick or how to read it?
Not even a socket size or proper wrench to use.

That looks same as my 2019 escape. Do you happen to know what size HEX is needed to get that plug out?

Would this procedure apply to the 2020 Escape with the 8F35?
I'm looking to do a drain and fill but don't have a scan tool to read the temps

I’ve got a 15 Fusion SE 2.5 L . 114 K miles. I don’t know if fluid been changed or not . Most recommend a drain and fill vs flush. Would you ?

***DONT FORGET TO DRAIN THE OLD FLUID OFF THE 11MM PLUG AT THE LOWER BOTTOM, FLAT SURFACE!!! wouldn't hurt to do 2 or 3 flushes at $50 each to get all the fluid out of torque convertor, one per week. Or pay me $5, 000 for a transmission install.😂

Great, I wish you would have put what the repair manual is saying at what temperature they want you to check as most cars are around 100 Fahrenheit, so full hot will be wrong, either way I think there is no right and wrong, I one time removed one gallon of overfill from a transmission and I drove the car before so after emptying I thought it going to be much better, no it was exactly the same, you cannot tell the difference. I am an auto mechanic for 35 years and it was a friend car so I drove the car one few days before, so I knew exactly how it was working. I think little bit over fill will be safer, dum engineers came up with this to save fuel so it will not rub the drums on oil, God forbit if it's 1/2 a quart more, in the mean time all the traffic that you get stuck in that is where all the fuel waist is and they don't open their mouth, they just want you to put thin oil 0W16 and God forbit if it's little bit more oil, then they build big cars, with heavy wheels, like on 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser the tire are very light to save rotating weight to save fuel the they abandon that because people don't know how to drive.
