The greats can have a crushing weight upon composers (Brahms paralyzing inferiority complex in regard to Beethoven for instance), in a way the result of a certain type of (musicological) history writing -19th century, idealist, German, Hegel comes again to mind - rather hierarchical, 'the great chain of (musical) being' starting with Holy Bach (a view somewhat revised in recent years by scholars with the rising interest for overlooked composers). So yes, to counteract this, some iconoclasm is in order. To paraphrase Hitchcock: " it's only music!".

Can we ask if Gould wasn't as good as many people say? Just asking
