I was a devoted scuba diver many years ago in Southern California. Why did I stop diving? My diving partner & I were diving out at Catalina Island one day. We were about 50-60 feet down in beautiful clear water (practically zero surge that day). We were down gathering rock when I spotted a very large gray shadow off in the distance. As it got closer, we knew what it was: a very large Great White. We loaded our Co2 guns, prepped our spears, readied our knives and took up shark defense position. The water's out there are Sharkey, but we were surprised at the size of the shark. It circled us a few times just checking us out and then swam off. Needless to say, we called it a day! These large sharks are big for a reason: they are successful hunters. I only went diving a few times after that incident; I couldn't shake off that encounter. The Great White was too close for comfort (I even had nightmares). What finally convinced me to stop diving? One of my diving instructors was a shark "expert" (I received a couple of weeks of excellent instruction & knowledge of sharks). Well, he was with a bunch of divers off the coast of Guadalupe Island (off the coast of Mexico) doing night dives (Nat'l. Geographic was filming the dives). Anyway, my shark instructor was a bit of a show-off. He decided to be the first diver in the water (mind you, it was dusk!). Instead of dropping the dive lights into the water first just to take a quick look around, he entered the water with a big splash, BIG MISTAKE! He had jumped into a feeding frenzy of sharks that were about 10-15 feet down. Needless to say, they couldn't get him out of the water fast enough. Yes, he was devoured. The diver's on the boat were only able to get a few pieces of him 😮😢 From what I heard, it was beyond horrific. The day I heard that story was when I sold my diving gear. Sadly, this Guy broke his own rules: 1) Guadalupe Island waters are shark infested (in my book), and there ARE some very big sharks down there; 2) he had very bright diving lights (for filming) and did not use them to check the water first (the water is clear there; he would've seen the shark activity); 3) he entered the water with a big splash (wrong thing to do!); 4) dusk IS shark feeding time (early first light hours & early evening -dusk- hours are typically shark feeding hours); 5) Guadalupe Is notorious for various types of sharks (and there ARE plenty of them). If he had just held back, and followed his own rules. Very sad. I still LOVE the ocean; I grew up on the ocean surfing, body surfing, boogie boarding, sailing, fishing and diving. But, I know the perils and have great respect for the ocean. RIP Randy. ❤

Rick, from the second story is such a legend! What a brave guy. A real shame Yana didn't make it. May she rest in peace.

That Cameron story is crazy, I mean alcohol or not to jump into pitch black tropical waters at night is just insane. Prayers to his family.

My late, great uncle was stationed on the USS Indianapolis. I remember speaking to him briefly about his Navy deployment. He started off strong, then quickly went silent. I always unaware of the horrible fate the mighty ship faced. He was a great man. Ed Turk.

First one- I know exactly how Mick's mom felt. I lost my middle son when he was 19 and I worry all the time that lightning will strike twice.

I cannot imagine the absolute terror of swimming away from a shark, not knowing if it’s chasing you down from behind! Or from beneath!! I can’t imagine and I never want to!

The Simon Nellist attack in Sydney, Australia and Vladimir Popov attack in Egypt really makes one revaluate the mistaken identity theory....

I understand the friends being terrified to enter the water to help her. But God bless this man, who didn’t know the woman at all. For sacrificing his own life to help a complete stranger. What a true gentleman. A true hero 🙏🙏🙏

I was surfing at 10 years old off the east coast of Florida. Crystal clear water. My board was 6ft. A bull shark longer than my board, and as thick as a car swam underneath me. Don't think it even registered me, but...41 now. Not been back in the water since.

I'm from NJ and always loved body or boogie boarding since childhood and was a lifeguard for 10 years. For whatever reason, I never feared the water. In my 20s, I moved to West Palm Beach, FL and one of my first times swimming in Palm Beach, I went snorkeling farther then anyone around me. I was chasing some angelfish and quickly found myself in water 30 ft+ deep and that was the first time I experienced that primeval fear of water. Call me crazy, but I've craved that exhilarating experience ever since. But it was the last time I've ever went that far out in my life and it will stick with me forever

Dolphins are known to save humans from sharks. Dolphins are capable of killing sharks. Dolphins are wonderful sea mammals(?).

It's always tragic when young folks encounter such attacks in the sea. As a parent, I feel so SAD for their families.

Experts always say that sharks don't target human or they just take a bite then swim away. I call it B.S. a human form looks nothing like a seal, put it this way if your in the Serengeti and u come across a pride of lions what do u think would happen ? 🤔 only 2 words, COMMON SENSE
