In his New Year address, Vladimir Putin has told Russians that the country will move forward with confidence in 2025 and that he's proud of his achievements.

The Russian president, who's been in charge for 25 years, paid tribute to the soldiers fighting in the war in Ukraine, calling them true heroes.

But the war has had devastating consequences for Ukraine and for Russia, which is suffering heavy losses on the battlefield and economic pressure from sanctions.

After nearly three years of fighting, how do the people of Russia view what's happening?

The BBC’s Russia Editor Steve Rosenberg went into the streets of Moscow to ask Russians about their hopes for 2025.

"I am 74 years old, my pension is 14K rubles (120 euros) and I have to work to feed myself" - I trust Putin he says. He is 74 and he's still waiting for better life.

People are carefully choosing their words.

" We believe in our leader", the 74 years old man receiving approx. $173/month a pension and still working . Just paradise.

As a person living in Russia, please keep in mind while watching that people risk 20 years in prison for "discrimination of the army", when they answer these questions. It's only been recently that an old man got a real sentence for answering a question in a street survey like this. A lot of people who are against the government just avoid even participating, because they don't want a life in jail

Poor people are easier to control and brainwash. Just give them hope for a better life and they will follow you.
They don't want freedom, they just want to feel safe...

There are a lot of Eastern Europeans in my American city. There is an area called "Little Russia" and there are also a lot of Ukrainians, Bosnians, Serbs, Croats...and they all get along here. The American-Russians and American-Ukrainians I know are lovely people, so the fact that hundred of thousands of them are dying needlessly is deeply sad.

Just like Germany in the 1930's, people are just worried about "what to put on the table", sliding slowly into a more and more totalitarian nightmare, and then in the end will realize that perhaps they too will suffer from the evil things they choose to casually to ignore.

That man says he trusts Putin, yet just one of Putin's luxury coats costs more than the majority of retirees yearly salaries in Russia 😕. These people are hopeless...

Thank you for this video. I’m Russian and live there since i was born and it’s just awful. I can’t explain. I’m so glad that there are more and more people who are against war. I pray for the ending and pray for peace in Ukraine and freedom for Russia.

I very tired of seeing that "Z"s everywhere: on cars, on public transport, on buildings, even in TV. Hearing about SVO (special military operation) makes me sick so much.
