I’m old enough to live thorough all of these events and we (eastern Europeans) were screaming about what Putin does and what it will lead to at the time. Germany and France just found it funny.

Strange they mentioned being twice invaded by Western armies but neglected to mention the fact that prior to the second time they were allied with Germany (yes, that one) and helped invade Poland.

The war in Ukraine is in no way NATO's fault. An informal agreement made with an extinct nation is not enforceable. Even then it's not like Russia cares about any diplomatic treaties in the first place, like that one with Ukraine where they promised never to invade. Also you act like NATO forced these countries to join when in reality every single member in eastern Europe joined because if they didn't they would all end up like Ukraine and Belarus. If NATO didn't "expand" east there would only be more war and Russian imperialism, not less.

I'm sorry, but NATO had nothing to do with why Putin attacked Ukraine
If NATO didn't exist he probably would have invaded sooner
He wants to rebuild the Soviet Union or Empire depending on how you look at his desire to be a new tsar of Russia
He just rails against NATO because they are in his way

One thing not mentioned is that the European NATO countries let their defense budgets drop well below the minimum required, to the point of embarrassment. They were no danger to Russia whatsoever.

Why wouldn't Ukraine want the security of NATO, since they were being attacked by Russia? That's why Finland joined NATO, and why Sweden wants to join NATO. Russia might want to ask why does anyone want to join NATO?

On Ukraine: It was in 2014!! NOT in 2016…

It is a *false* assumption to think if NATO had not expanded, Russia would have remained peaceful with their neighbors. They would have used other excuses to justify their actions.

Gorbachev said in his memoirs that NATO made no such promise, i.e. to not extend NATO eastward. He said NATO only promised not to extend the newly unified Germany’s border farther east. It’s not like there was any chance that any Warsaw Pact nation would join NATO in 1990 so the matter was not discussed. It was an absurd idea.

The problem with NATO for Russia is that countries voluntarily request to join NATO. Russia absolutely cannot oppose NATO militarily. Which is why countries join and NATO grows.

Russia has roughly one-eighths of the planet's landmass. But that is not enough. Russia wants the sphere of influence the USSR had. It just isn't going to happen. Russia is NOT the USSR.

Correction: 2014 was Ukraine rejecting Russian influence

Those countries wanted to join NATO. Russia doesn't have the right to use other countries for anything. Also they signed a treaty to not attack Ukraine as part of the deal for Ukraine to give up their nukes and look how that went.
What we are seeing now is opportunism which has been building for a decade by Russia, pure and simple. It has vastly more to do with gas fields discovered in Ukraine not all that long ago and Russian desires to eliminate regional competition for gas supply.

I am sorry but if I had a neighbour that commits murders on a regular basis, I would certainly seek out a protection service. No one can blame ukraine or NATO on this. If Russia's leaders were not the crazy murderers they are and stick to the basic low level political corruption we see in every country and stoped trying to interfere in Ukraine's politics, Ukraine would not have seeked protection.

"Without firing a single shot, " isn't strictly accurate.

Putin must be working for NATO. Employee of the year.

It really irritates me, and I can imagine the free, independent nations, that this keeps being framed as if NATO is a conquering force. They're not. Each country that has joined has CHOSEN to do so, as is their right as free, autonomous nations.

Finland: Knock knock
Russia: Who’s there?
Finland: Finnish.
Russia: Finnish who?
Finland: *Finnish Putin!*

I don't get why NATO is to blame for Ukraine just exercising its sovereignty

I disagree. Russia does not get to dictate what other independent countries do just because they are bigger and paranoid of a defensive alliance.
