The foreign secretary, Liz Truss, has said she would immediately reduce taxes and introduce a moratorium on the green energy levy in an effort to curb inflation if elected.

The former chancellor and leadership rival, Rishi Sunak, has accused her of setting up a 'moral failure' if she does not support the most vulnerable people through the cost of living crisis. Both were speaking in Belfast during Tory hustings.

"We shouldn't have put up national insurance", then why did you vote for it Liz?

I can't help feeling this 'contest' is a bit too much like deciding which Titanic deck-chair might give the best view of the iceberg!

Well there is one thing for sure, Truss and Sunak won't be suffering because of the cost of living. We need more politicians with their feet on the ground and not in their bank account.

Sunak: I would feed the poor to the homeless!
Truss: I would do that, but also throw disabled people into the canals!

I love the Freudian slip in the title - they Spa instead of Spar 🤣

Tax cuts will most benefit billionaires, whilst the poorest suffer, great plan Truss you muppet!

Watched him try to put fuel into someone else's car for a photo op and then proceeded to pay with a credit card he didn't know how to use. He is a perfect candidate for PM!

When will these people be thrown in jail?

Yes Liz, but it’s hard to go self employed especially when you can’t afford to make the change to become your own boss. It’s expensive to start a business

You do know they are both absolute disasters for this country don't you????

Unfortunately for Sunak, he is opposing something that most of the Tory members will benefit from. Its clear Truss will win because of that.

What do they know about the cost of living crisis? Their government has been at the wheel for several years now, so when are they going to take responsibility for the mess the country is in and do something to help those who are really suffering as a result?

Glad they had a nice spa day, I'm sure it was very refreshing.

I swear news companies are allergic to grammatical effort.

What is he talking about. He has had a chance to change things and he’s just got richer. He has no idea about working class people.

It's "spar"; "spa" is the luxury bath / self-attention routine.

"Spar" is to debate, argue, fight.

C'mon Guardian, get with it.

The Guardian was famous for hysterical typographical errors - even digitally they still manage it - the word is 'spar' not 'spa'. Dictionary: If you spar with someone, you exchange light blows — either literally by punching each other, or figuratively by exchanging verbal blows.

Another 2 unelected by the public Tories, how long is this acceptable? Politicians working problems not solutions for decades & getting away with it
