Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak clash over cost of living strategies at conservative hustings

Liz Truss has said she rejects the ‘Gordon Brown economics’ of helping people directly with bills as her rival, Rishi Sunak, warned the British people ‘will not forgive us’ if vulnerable households do not get extra help this winter.

The foreign secretary also accused journalists of framing questions around the energy bill in a ‘leftwing way … What I don’t support is taking money off people in tax and then giving it back to them in handouts. That to me is Gordon Brown economics,' Truss said during an hustings event in Darlington

It's so bizarre watching this, the world is burning and the UK's politics looks like a crab bucket. I still don't understand why so many people vote against their own interests.

Most people are on minimum wage which is around 13k a year, the energy crisis is going to push prices up to around a 3rd of their annual income. They don't pay much tax on 13k a year so tax cuts are not going to help the 22% of the population who are stuck in working poverty. Giving people back their own money when they are struggling to survive rather than giving it to corporations in subsidies is a necessity.

At least Gordon can spell, do basic maths, probably knows a little history, and geography, understands diplomacy, doesn't have a hang up about cheese, can probably find the exit door, knows what the word Economics means, and knows the names of animals, is consistent, and doesn't have an artificially low voice. Isn't mute or deaf, isn't a warmonger, and doesn't put the World on nuclear alert due to your appalling lack of understanding and diplomacy. All things Dizzy fails at.

Uk debt in 2010 was 74.6% of GDP
Uk debt in 2022 is 96.1% of GDP

I’ll go with Brown, thanks.

I would rather have Gordon Brown economics than Truss's Patrick Minford economics.

Cut taxes for the people who don't earn enough to pay tax to help with energy bill's genius idea!

How anyone could prefer Liz over Rishi is beyond me. Now is not the time for austerity.

As a person, I absolutely detest Rishi Sunak. But it pains to say he'd be the right man for the job now, actually has a proper economic plan for the recession ahead, so I hope he becomes PM instead

Let's have more of these talks and interviews. It is needed to expose this really useless PM candidate by the name of Liz Truss one by one. If by now at least the selection committee and public do not realise how bad it is for the country to have Liz Truss, then nothing can. Rishi Sunak is the man for the job at least for these two years- plain and simple. You should leave his character analysis and other controversies aside and focus on the need of the hour.

Brown was widely praised for his understanding of economics and getting economy working again globally after the sub prime global crash. To put it bluntly he understood global economics better than anyone alive or dead on the planet. If Brown says do something do it

Truss is trivialising the cost of living crisis. Doesn't she get that its an abnormal state of affairs that requires a more interventionist policy than the usual Tory sugar and sorcery

Is Truss saying she doesn't support taking money as a tax from the rich and giving it to the poor?

Gordon Brown who is recognised around the world for his knowledge of economics and Dense Liz Truss a incompetent clueless minister. I know who I’d listen to.

Rishi is right, direct support to people is needed!

Yeah, Liz. Economics from a guy who understands economics as opposed to a tedious Thatcher-impersonating cheese merchant who seems to have memory loss about her own government's policies.

How bad is it, and how bad does it look on the conservative party, that lizz truss is the favourite to be pm! I know Sunak is no socialist but by comparison to truss he actually looks, to this non conservative anyway, reasonable. Something I never thought I'd say about the guy. Relativity and all that.

She has no idea how much pensioners will suffer nor the people who cannot afford to stretch their wages to the end of the week. Just satisfying the very rich to cut their taxes. Rishi is listening to the poor
