On December 2nd, 2023, Maria Fernanda Martinez Jimenez set our for a swim with her little girl in the pacific waters of Jalisco, Mexico's Melaque Beach. Little did Maria realize that she'd have to make the most altruistic of decisions humanly possible. This video delves into the grim & tragic details behind this recent fatal shark attack.
This video in no way intends to sensationalize, but rather spread awareness about risks that are very real, especially for those who are frequent ocean adventurers.

Interesting fact about Bullsharks: the largest one ever caught was 10 feet long and weighed 1000 lbs. In the video I state they reach "upto" 290 lbs but I meant to say "over" 290. And "upto" 10 feet in length.

I live two hours from this place: I always tell people to be very careful because there are crocodiles and sharks in the bay! People never believe me when I talk about sharks .. they have changes their minds .. this is heartbreaking and awful

Mexican here. I watched the news report the day it happened and the story was slightly different. Fishermen reported having seen a shark before the competition and the floating games took place to the local authorities, who denied it and claimed it was a dolphin. So the competition began and the floating games were installed. Maria wasn't even near her 5yo son when she noticed the shark. She rushed to her son and threw him into the floating game, and that's when the shark took her. Her body was later recovered, and as you said she was missing a leg. They said she died from drowning, not from blood loss.
The worst part of this story is that the beach was closed only for a week, then Jalisco's governor deemed it safe again just because there were "no more sightings of the shark."
Tbh, I'm skeptical about the statistics on shark attacks. There was a case this year in Cancún about a US American boy who was attacked by a shark and luckily survived. However, local authorities keep claiming that it wasn't a shark. Not sure if it would be counted then. In the end, these statistics influence tourism so I wouldn't be surprised if cases like this ain't counted to keep them low. Just some thoughts.

I live in an Australian coastal town and as a child and teen i would occasionally swim at the beach but havent done so for 25 years. Too many shark attacks just in our town. We put a pool in our backyard and that is where we swim. None of my family ever swim in the ocean. I personally prefer pool to beach swimming anyway cause i hate the sand getting everywhere, but seriously an old classmate from school was attacked here in recent years, many before and after him. Its not worth it in my opinion.

If you swim freely in the ocean you make it at your own risk but if someone set up a playground in the water children and relatives think this is safe. No protecting nets??!!! Imagine noise and vibrations made by children grabbing and climbing onto rubber of the inflatable playground, splashing in water and screaming together..this can definitely be a trigger for sharks. No way

Of course there’s going to be a story blaming the victim for the attack, in hopes tourism won’t be adversely affected.

My deepest condolences to the victim and her family. This video did a great job in presenting this tragic news, however. Thank you for uploading. 🙏🏻

So sad for the little girl who had to see her mother taken by a shark.

I agree - as a parent this story is especially devastating. Maria did all she could to help her daughter live - that’s true for either account of the details. I’m beyond heartbroken for the little girl who lost her mother and witnessed the attack. Maria looks like a child herself in the photos of her - she was so young when she died. Sending so much love to that little 5 year old girl and all of the loved ones of both Maria and her daughter
🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

There have been a few people ripped to shreds in the lakes and waterways on the Gold Coast by more than one bull shark 🦈 at a time. Recently saw a guy turn on his sonar in the Nerang river as he pounded the water with his fishing rod. Within seconds there were between 10 and 20 shark silhouettes surrounding the boat.

Not sure why there isn’t fencing to keep the sharks and crocodiles out of the children’s play area? One would think this would be first priority.

I live in Barra de Navidad, which is in the same small bay, about 2km away. The women was with her child, just made her way to the floating aquapark when she was attacked. She lost her leg and was immediately brought to shore. Tragically she died as to blood loss due to the catastrophic nature of the bite. I went to her memorial, in Melaque shortly afterwards, which was beautiful and touching. What happened was a tragedy, and, apparently, there'd never been attack in deacades, and that's coming from nationals and exparts that been here for decades. They suspect that the floating aquapark may have attracted the shark, not sure. The park was taken down last week. Tragedy for the family and the community
