Now in my middle-age, I can't believe how far I used to go out in the ocean when I went to the beach with my friends when we were teenagers. This was back in the 70's. We'd wait till after 6 p.m., get on our bikes and ride to the beach when there were no more lifeguards on duty, and we didn't have to hear them blow their whistles and wave us back to shore because we were too far out. Anyway, we used to go way out over our heads and stay in the water till it started getting dark. The beaches were mostly empty by then and we went home. When I think of what could have been lurking just beneath us or just a few feet away from us in the water, it creeps me the freak out! The stupid things we did as kids! This was Rockaway Beach, Brooklyn/Queens, NY.🙄

I’m from Sydney Australia 🇦🇺 we have the most beautiful beaches, but I would never ever go in the water even though we have plane ✈️ and choppers flying constantly, and lifesavers keeping an eye for sharks 🦈 what amazes me people who go surfing 🏄‍♂️ all by themselves, and most of the time they’re lucky someone will be there to help them once they get attacked by sharks, and few months later they’re back surfing again that takes guts.!

I've had a morbid fascination for sharks since I was 10 when my dad yook me to watch Jaws at the cinema. Deadly but absolutely beautiful and I have nothing but respect for these magnificent creatures. I stood on a beach watching them thrashing around, was an awesome sight. Even when you can't see them they are there, after almost 50 years I'm glad I'm not naive enough to think you can actually go in the sea and not encounter one!

a member of the dive club my parents were in was taken by a great white in 1987 when I was thirteen I loved the beach and was still surfing into my twenties

Sharks can be good or bad just like humans. Bad sharks are known for things like graffiti, vandalism and streaking during live national broadcasts.

What still amazes me is how people are so surprised when sharks attack you're simulating their prey wetsuits surf boards etc...and you're in their territory
