Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion – the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me – from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

My 308 can drop a good sized caribou and can do the same with moose, with that said I believe I am good with a 308

Western hunter here. I have no idea what angle or point he’s attempting. But we have 2 family.308’s. Both guns combined have harvested probably into the 20s plus animals. From elk, mule deer white tails and hogs. Ours definitely will remain.

I don’t plan on shooting at an elk that’s over 300 yards away. Within that range, I doubt an elk could feel much difference between a 308 or a 300 magnum.

Yet people use bow and arrow just fine. Skill issues more like it

I think this 308 win stuff is click bait. A lot are "better" but you should be able to kill anything from groundhogs to elk with a 308. You just need to get within a reasonable range and be able to put it where it counts with a quality bullet.

30-06 is the best. It’s got the ideal velocity to weight ratio and many ammo options

This is bs. If you can’t get within 4 football fields, then you need to hang it up. 308 can more than do it and do it well. These guys are always jumping on the latest band wagon of new and “improved technology”. How about skill? Can you really not get within 300 yards? I live in the West and find guys like this just looking for excuses

It just seems to me that he is selling " modern high octane cartridges." Someone working for the firearms industry?

If the US military can use the 308 for a sniper round with kill shots over 1000 yards then it should work fine for hunting

Just bought a Howa Superlite in 308, and I live in the West. Super excited to have such a versatile cartridge in a light gun.

Hanging up the long action I’ve used previously as I just don’t need the distance. I have no interest in taking shots beyond 400 yards.

400 yards is almost, not quite, but almost a dang quarter of a mile. 95% of deer shot in the west are shot well under that.

We’re at a point in society where we are so bored that we are just making up excuses for new cartridges to get excited about.

Being from the west i have ALWAYS used a 308 Winchester.
If you cant shoot it dont matter what you miss with.
A 180 has plenty of kinetic energy out at extended range. How dead do you need your meat?

This man was worried about being rude to a cartridge😂

Asking a question like this without giving more information is just dumb.
Target? Range? Hunter's skill level? Recoil sensitivity?
There is no one perfect caliber, and the conditions are what helps you to choose which you should use.

Man I only subscribed to Ron's channel a month ago because i loved his in depth analysis and non biased opinion. Now it's just shorts from this boring guy click baiting with 308 bashing stating nothing more than his opinion.

Most people are taking unethical shots at long distances . The 308 will take most deer at an ethical range

This doesn’t apply to all western hunting. He needs to be far more specific. If you are using the right loads. You should be fine. Yes, if you are shooting 400 plus yards you may want to consider something bigger. .308 is fine for most. Everyone’s entitled to there opinions.

Man people get triggered when the 308 is talked about negatively. But be honest and truthful, the 308 win is great, but isn’t that hot of a round. 30-06 beats it, 300 win mag beats it, 300 weatherby beats it, 300 WSM beats it. But that’s based off off velocity and size. 308 has more mild recoil and cheaper ammo.

You don’t know where people are hunting, what they’re hunting, or what circumstances they’re faced with. Some people are comfortable and good enough for longer shots. What round would you pick at those farther distances? Cause I’d want something hotter than 308. And while 308 can hit 1000 yards for long range target shooting, I’d rather stick with the 300 weatherby.

Hunting is not bench rest shooting the 308 is still so versatile it can be loaded to Match near any other suitable for most game. It will still be around when many new cartridges have faded away. If u need a high octane cartridge, best hone ur hunting skills instead of your shooting skills

I used to think the 30-30 was good for any game here in Minnesota. Then I read about a kid here in far Northwest Minnesota that shot an elk at almost 400 yards with (I think) a 7mm. That's a tough shot for a 30-30. 😅
