I grew up in a very rural area and all the gas stations carried ammunition, but it was the holy trinity. 22 LR, 12 GA and 30-06.

Arguing over these 2 cartridges is time wasted that could have been better used for hunting 😉

Someone gifted me a beautiful Remington 700 in .30-06. So in my opinion, it's the better of the two.

Someone else gifted my son a Savage 110 in .270. In his opinion, it's the better of the two.

The deer we've shot didn't care either way.

I love my 270. My 1970 Remington 700 is a tack driver when I feed her 130 grains at a time. Cold bore shots are money, warm bore, too.

My primary rifle is a .25-06 and my other is a .270, both are astoundingly good.

Had a '06 bolt action military 1903A3 as a kid. Being a lefty, bought a Win Model 88 in 308. Then bought a Browning A-Bolt in .270. Hunted deer and Elk successfully for 20ish years. Then in 1983 bought a Thompson Center Contender Super 14 in 30-30 (223 for Coyotes) and haven't looked back. 25 deer, 1 bear, umpteen Coyotes. My point being, they're all good calibers and get the job done. And yuuup, I'm an old fart of 77 waiting for the next 6 weeks til opening day.🏕🦌... 🤠

When I bought my first rifle, they had it in 30-06, .270, and in 7 mag for the same price with the same scope, same rifle, same price etc.... i left with the .270 and have never been disappointed with my choice !!!

Both are fine choices. If someone argues one over the other with me, I let them win.

Shot placement is key, no matter the caliber!

I still have the first rifle my dad got me, a Savage model 110 chambered in .270. I think I'll always be biased towards it!

The grand old 30-06 is a much more versatile cartridge with many great bullet choices, especially on our largest game animals, but both are excellent cartridges.

I remember in the 1970's and 80's, factory 30-06 hunting ammo went from flat base 150 grain bullet to flat base 180 grain bullet and 270 factory hunting ammo went from 130 grain flat base bullet to 150 grain flat base bullet. If you wanted a 30 caliber 165 grain boat tail or a 270 140 grain boat tail you had hand load the ammo. Those weren't factory loaded until the 1990's. Before modern powders, the 150 grain 270 ammo was rated at 2800 feet per second, but only reached 2600 fps. The 130 grain 270 ammo was closer to its rated velocity, above 3000 fps though. The old factory 150 grain 270 ammo was disappointedly slow. Also 270 barrels seem pickier about bullet weight than 30-06 barrels. You might have a 270 barre that likes 130 grain bullets, but you might have one that prefers 150 grain bullets. Surprisingly, many 270 rifles do well with the boat tail 140 grain bullets. Boat tail bullets weren't that popular for hunting until bonded bullets became available. I remember being able to hand load 150 grain 270 bullets to factory ammo rated velocity, but factory was actually much slower. 270 cases stretch a lot when loaded to full power. I found the Winchester brand 270 cases lasted the most number of reloads. In the old days, the factory 150 grain loads were very mild and for real 270 power, you needed to buy 130 grain ammo. The 140 grain boat tail bullets changed everything and really extended the reach of 270.

I did my research too which is why I chose a rifle in 270 Winchester as my first rifle

I have both and I love both cartridges … the 270 is flatter shooting … but the 30-06 leaves bigger holes

There's more stopping power up to 500 yds with the 30-06, which if we're honest with ourselves is a range most of us will never shoot past.
