Virology Lectures 2023 #5: Attachment and Entry

Viruses are too large to pass through the membrane of the cell, a necessary step for these obligate intracellular parasites. To enter cells, viruses bind receptors on the plasma membrane and release their genome at the cell surface or within the cell. In this lecture we discuss how virus particles attach to cell receptors, the triggers for genome release from icosahedral and enveloped viruses, and how membrane fusion is regulated.

– Who Am I? –

I’m Vincent Racaniello, Earth’s Virology Professor.

I’m also a professor of virology at Columbia University in New York. I’ve been doing research on viruses since 1976, and teaching virology in classrooms and online since 1999. On this YouTube channel I share videos of my lectures, podcasts, and more.

New videos are uploaded several times each week.

Given the mechanism of nucleus entry, is there any microscopically detectable nucleus damage in parvovirus infection?

On Hydroxychloroquine, does the virus only enter lung cells? If not then does your argument against Hydroxychloroquine make sense? Did you say only the respiratory cells have TMPRSS2? If only respiratory cells have TMPRSS2, then would Hydroxychloroquine not still protect a large percentage of your cells that do not have TMPRSS2? Would that not make infection harder and slow the virus down?

Interesting, I didn't know that he had been paraphrasing old Ben Franklin, But, as they say, nothing new under the sun.

Physicist Richard Feynman once said, “The first principle is that you must not fool yourself, and you are the easiest person to fool.”
