Volvo XC40 (2019-2024): What Will Happen If You Drive Away Without A Smart Key?

In this video, we will examine a scenario when you accidentally drive away without a smart key in the 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024 Volvo XC40.

Will the car let you drive away and get to your destination?
Will you be able to start the car afterwards?
Will the smartphone Volvo On Call App help you start the car remotely and drive away without the smart key?
Will the alarm activate and how to deactivate it?

We will try to answer all these questions.

In our example, we are using Volvo XC40 and Volvo On Call App. The same could happen with other vehicles equipped with a smart key system.

The app only can remote start but when you try to drive it will look for the key and still won’t move.

When using the remote app to start vehicle from inside or outside of the vehicle. Will definitely need the key fob or the emergency key located in the key fob. The emergency key will have to be placed inside the center console for the car to be started. Please note that when you use any of the methods mentioned to start the vehicle. You must place your foot on the break push down while at the same time, turn the knob to start the vehicle.

Not sure why when the key was thrown from the vehicle the alert didn’t show that the key isn’t in the car. That is a major issue.

Locked myself out! Wife and I drove together to her friends house, I dropped her and left for Home Depot. When we left home I did not have my key in my pocket but she did had hers in her purse. Whoops! Fortunately she was not to far away so l got saved, but I’m still being reminded “DO YOU HAVE YOUR KEY” every F**king time I drive her 🚗. 😍😡😎

Left my farm an hr west of the city… fob in my chore coat inside the house. Got to a west Edmonton Mall and my xc90 not only didn’t tell me my fob wasn’t on board but it didn’t shut off either. I’d expect the display should have had a warning showing then I wouldn’t have left the house at all 🤬

Yes, the car has a lot of secrets when I picked up the my kid from the line from school I opened the trunk to put backpack, I did not turn off car, but when I returned, the car was turned off and put on the Parking which was an unusual super Parking I couldn’t even go at first because I didn’t I expected that my car was parked at some other Parking option, because my car was new, I just bought it, I didn’t fully know its tricks yet, so Volvo is super protect us🤪

stupid system for stupid person like me...I left key on the roof and find out I lost it after driving 30km...it should come message no key found if you drive more than 3meters..my all previous vehicles done it .. as well walk away locking way more nice than you have to lock by pressing finger on the handle

When ‘Key not found’ shows up on dash, which is within 100meters of leaving it behind, you turn the car around and go get it. You don’t switch off the engine. How is this hard?

I read if the Volvo red key (or guest key) is left in the car than you can start the car and go, by using the app.

1:00 Page 41 of the owner's manual says "Please check the last location that you threw the key".

There may be a solution to this: They should invent a fob which has a protrusion that can be put into a small slit next to the steering wheel. This way the probability of misplacement is minimal. It even could act as a logical key for being able to start the car.

Question: so you know the slightly older Volvos where they have the key holder next to the start button, I’ve realized that I can start and drive the vehicle without the key in the holder. What is the point of putting the key in there in the first place??
