CC is a way for a leader to stay in the loop. Not micromanage. I have my team cc me all the time, yet I don't interfere for months. However, sometimes I do receive escalations from the client, and the cc emails help me understand what has been going on.

As a leader I like to be CC'd on all comunications not because I want to micro-manage them, but because it allows me to alert them if they are making a mistake or losing track of the objective.
It also keeps me in the loop of what's everyone is doing which saves a ton of time on follow ups.

I'm a community organizer with 25 years of experience, and I can tell you that blanket statements like this are virtually useless. The best option is going to depend on how each individual works. Different people have different motivations and, as a community organizer, I don't have the luxury of hiring and firing; I have to work with what I have. Some people work best when you let them off the leash and let them practice their own initiative, but there are others who feel more confident when they have someone more experienced looking over their shoulder, even if that person is doing nothing but watching.

Leadership is about delegating to your team and empowering them to make decisions based on internal procedures and processes while maintaining the organisation's interest at all times. A leader should focus on finding ways and means to enable the independence of team members. When SHTF then the leader would step in and because he knows his thing, he would deal with the situation or brainstorm with the team to circumnavigate the issue. That way, the member who fucked up will feel supported while realising their mistake, unless they are completely stupid - in which case the leader has been lacking in his recruitment capabilities. The buck stops here. Leaders focus on the bigger picture and would only micromanage when they don't have what it takes to imagine the bigger picture.

Some people use this trick (mentioned in the video) to offload their own responsibilities to their subordinates specially dealing with the difficult situations. So, it's not a blanket rule to judge a great leader.
Great leader trusts it's people to do things but also keep an eye to support when needed.

Thats utopic. A good leader must build his team to get to that level. Mean time we keep an eye on the team because they still fuck up allot.

OverSimplification .. Leaders are there for a Reason. To be in the Loop. Not to deflect Responsibility to Juniors.

Never trick a leader. Leader's remember everything.

I think it depends, if the employee ask to put the leader in cc for suport, that's great, but a leader that always wants to be in cc to watch over the shoulder signals lack of trust.

i don’t think he’s talking about a manager of a team of 5 but probably the vP not needing 400 subordinate cc’s. some people just want others to know their working and cc people so unnecessarily. but for sure if you’re leading a small team go ahead stay in the loop. but i assume his book is gonna be ceo case studies so that’s probably the type of “leader” he’s describing

I think it's about finding the right balance between trusting / empowering your team but at the same time having an idea of what's going on without being a micromanaging helicopter boss. People can take it too far in either direction. Good communication and being available for your team is essential.

I don’t fully disagree with what Simon is saying BUT from first hand experience there has been multiple times when a team member is asked to execute on a certain task and that task doesn’t end up getting followed through on. There is also times when you believe in your team member to handle and emergency and it just gets shoved off to the side and slips through the cracks. It just depends on the circumstances of your business. Good leaders are always informed though, it’s good to stay in the loop without micro managing.

While I agree with you on the trust part, I have to disagree with you on the "c.c." part.
My boss trusts me to send my own emails to our business partners or customers, but sometimes he asks me to c.c. him because we work in the same department and the information may pertain to him. This also eliminates any disconnect and misinterpretation.

I agree with this, with the condition that the level of trust, rapport and experience have been built over a period of time.
I don’t think anyone will be reckless enough to do all this to a newbie. There should be a foundation that has been built before this level of empowerment can happen.

I'm a good leader. I always let people do everything for me.

Truly inspirational how someone without any actual leadership experience has marketed himself into a self-proclaimed (implicitly) expert critic of leadership.

Simon does have excellent powers of observation especially in terms of the intangible variabilities in leadership, however there is a complete void of constructive/ actionable takeaways which is most likely due to his lack of actual leadership experience. Basically he can make surface level observations and speculate on some plausible causes but has no clue on what to actually do to remedy any leadership opportunities.

In order for his tremendous potential to be constructive there must be some focus on corrective actions and behaviors for the underlying causes of poor leadership instead of just highlighting the symptoms of poor leadership merely for the sake of captivating a growing audience of disgruntled (mostly millennial) employees.

Agreed, also a reflection of your ability to train and coach your team.

disagree. CC or BCC keeps the leader informed about what their subordinates are working on. It's not micromanaging, it's good communication. unless she or he decides to nitpick on every little detail of the subordinate's work.

My current employer tried the trusting method but do to some crap hitting the fan, Micro-management is kicking in and that alone made our studio a bit stressful. I guess it's a good way to discipline the staff.

Then, what is the job for leaders? I find some leaders don't know the situation happening and make wrong decision.
