The reason you switched to Ubuntu from Fedora, that's the exact reason matter when you choose the distro. Not everyone is advanced user, or have the time to spend in babysitting the PC. I used Fedora for a while and faced some issues. After spending a lot of time I could not resolve them. With Arch based distros, getting Nvidia drivers work was a pain for me. I prefer to stick to a simple distro like Ubuntu or Ubuntu based, which are easier to use and manage, and require less babysitting. I can focus on my work instead of my OS.

I resume Linux distros as Arch Debian Fedora. I think they cover 90% of market share. Then there are Gennto, NixOS, Void and others.

And the main difference is the package management, some basic libraries and the modified kernel.

To anyone who might be confused in regards to Linux distro's?...the distro of itself should be something you're comfortable using....if you're not you already have a computer/...you could try using it as a "Live USB" version to get a feel for my advice to you is this....take what you want from your current PC/ laptop....save it someplace either in the cloud or external storage?...and take the plunge....sure....study the distro you are most drawn up on it etc?...but don't meander in between Windows and Linux....find the one for you?...and leave. don't look back...trust me you will not only broaden your mind and expose you to so much more?...but it will also give you a better understanding of computers in general...

As a beginner, I found ZorinOS very appealing when hopping from Windows,
Some recommend Linux Mint as well..

I have been using Linux Mint for years after leaving Ubuntu. It is stable. Missing features: PDF reader features for students, Global menu applet, Wayland support, and PUBG gaming.

Here is one thing i wanna add to this video: Chose distro based on how you feel using it. If you want apps or stuff from other distros use distrobox, that way you can do whatever you want, you can use any app and distro doesn't matter.

I hope in the near future open source projects become the go to option for everything so that people support the project because they are getting value. Thank you. Let me take a look at deepin.

Nice video! At this point after messing around for the first year generally I just recommend Silverblue to new switchers. It prevents them from seriously damaging their OS, stays up to date for hardware support and generally just works. The only drawback is that when they do need to add a package they have to substitute rpm-ostree for dnf, but it's not a huge deal.

I also like Vanilla but it's not quite mature enough yet and the advantages it brings are not ones a novice user will need.

Your point about not distro hopping is very valid, it becomes it's own hobby and keeps people from really mastering what they have. Unless someone does something amazing and unique, I'll stick with Silverblue until/unless Vanilla reaches parity and demonstrates the ability to provide smooth and routine upgrades to new versions.

I started with Ubuntu and after distro hopping returned back to Ubuntu and keep using it alongside Windows 10 while out of curiosity try various distros through VMs. I guess in terms of desktop environment I'm quiet used to GNOME the way it made on Ubuntu. I don't like vanilla GNOME experience. I also like KDE Plasma as it reminds me of Windows 7 days.

I use arch with Xfce and Hyprland desktop environments 😎. All of that on an old dell latitude e6230 with 8gb of ddr3 ram and 225gb ssd with an intel 2nd gen core i5. It works nice

I have used multiple distros but yes I also agree that Fedora is one of the best as I didn't face any major problems with it. Only thing I didn't found solution on linux which I daily drive is the Verifying Digital Signatures on PDF, do you have any workaround with this??

My current line-up is Pop!_OS on two machines, Windows 11 + WSL, and I very recently swapped out Raspbian for VOID linux. Beyond that, I have experience with Ubuntu, Rockylinux, RedHat, and many more.

I still have my stack of CDs I burned back in 2008 for distro hopping. I wonder if the loss of CD drives has hurt the beginner experience some. I know storage is cheaper than ever, but it still does not compare to burning a CD that cost pennies. In fact, the CD was vital to my early journey as the first distro I stuck with was a Puppy linux that loaded into RAM. I would boot from the CD, load my USB storage, and be off to the races. Much like Tails OS now, no trace after shutdown.

Running ubuntu or its official derivative whether it is kubuntu lubuntu xubuntu etc feel slower due to snaps. better to use mint as base and install your fav DE. BTW how is it using debian sid ?
