*Correction: Trump was president from 2017-2021 (not 2016-2020). Also, I said that a president can be in office for a maximum of 8 years but it's actually 10 years if they succeed to the office of president without election (e.g. when the vice president takes over) and serve less than two years, they may run for two full terms.*
👉Kamala Harris or Donald Trump? Two weeks from today, Americans will vote for their next president and the whole world is watching! But elections in the US can be pretty confusing, so let’s talk about it. What do you think about the American election system? And who do you think will win this year's election?

ABOUT ME: Hallo, Servus, and welcome to my channel! My name is Felicia (Feli), I'm 30 years old, and I'm a German living in the USA! I was born and raised in Munich, Germany but have been living in Cincinnati, Ohio off and on since 2016. I first came here for an exchange semester during my undergrad at LMU Munich, then I returned for an internship, and then I got my master's degree in Cincinnati. I was lucky enough to win the Green Card lottery and have been a permanent resident since 2019! In my videos, I talk about cultural differences between America and Germany, things I like and dislike about living here, and other topics I come across in my everyday life in the States. Let me know what YOU would like to hear about in the comments below. DANKE :)ttcneh

This young lady is from Germany and has a better understanding of our system than most of our citizens.

Feli, as a lawyer with a good background in civics, I want to say that I wish every American would watch this! Your explanations are remarkably correct, clear, and thorough.

I’m surprised at how civil the comments are. It’s very pleasant to see

Without the electoral college, nearly all presidential elections would be decided by the more densely populated coastal cities.

One minor correction. While Feli is correct in stating that currently a president can only serve two 4-year terms. She stated that would limit a person to be president for 8 years. The actual limit is 10 years. A person can serve 2 years as president for a deceased/resigned/removed from office president and then still serve two 4-year terms that they win for a total of 10 years.

As an Alaskan I actually really appreciate the electoral college, because it helps balance the power between populace states like California and Texas and les populace states like Alaska. Some say “land doesn’t vote” but imagine if California got to overshadow Alaska in basically everything just because they’re the majority even though they have less natural resources and use ours. I am actually glad we have the electoral college.

"...their vote didn't really count." That's not 100% accurate. I live in a state where I am not inline with the leading party, but I still vote every year. Just casting a vote sends the message that we are watching and we care. If you give up on voting, you enable politicians to think they can do whatever they feel like. That is a recipe for disaster. Everyone should vote!

I would love to only have to hear candidates campaign for only 6 weeks!!

Thank you so much Feli, for being so kind and respectful about such a topic that is very polarizing. It's beautifully refreshing to see a video that's not just bashing the candidate that you're not voting for.

Thank you for your time and effort to create this, with useful information in a non-partisan manner. To echo others, as an American, I wish more people in the US would learn and understand these things.

Miss Feli is a very good speaker. I like her vocabulary, grammar, cadence, and superb diction! It's curious how slight her German accent is. Excellent ❤

Watching from Germany, I think an advantage of the electoral system is to create some balance between the dense populated cities/ states and the less populated/ rural ones. It gives power to the single states as opposed to a too centralized view.

The electoral college was not created because the founding fathers didn't think people were smart enough to directly elect their leaders. It was created so that heavily populated states did not control the government. For example, without the electoral college today you would only need to win the majority of votes in about the most populous states, about 10 of them and you would win the election. Small states like Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Delaware, would have virtually no say in the Presidents election and therefore none of their concerns would be addressed. They might not ever get a visit from the nominees. Say Colorado was polluting a river that then flowed down into New Mexico. A president may not even concern himself with it because New Mexico only has 2 million people and is not as important as keeping voters in Colorado happy with their nearly 6 million voters.
Today, the Democrats have lost a couple of elections (Al Gore & Hillary Clinton) to the electoral vote but won the popular vote and so it has become a democratic talking point to get rid of the electoral college. You may find many websites, even from prestigious academia that say the electoral college no longer makes sense, but these are from people who are democrats. I suspect that is why you found this misinformation about it being because of not trusting the populous intelligence.
