Mitarashi Dango is my husband’s childhood favorite and is also featured in one of my favorite animes. In this video, you’ll learn how to make quick and easy Japanese snack called, “Mitarashi Dango” using Dangoko Rice Flour right at home with just a few simple ingredients!

*Ingredients:*

1. Dangoko powder - 1 full bag
2. Warm to hot Water - 170 ml (2/3 cups)
3. (optional) Granulated sugar - 2 tsp

*For the sauce:*

1. Soy sauce - 2 tbsp
2. Water - 1 cup
3. Mirin - 2 tbsp
4. Brown sugar - 3 tbsp
5. Potato starch - 2 tbsp

*Instructions:*

1. Prep your wooden skewers (about 4-5 sticks) by soaking them in water.
2. *Follow the package instructions as each manufacturer has different measurements.* With this “Dangoko” brand, in a bowl I put in the whole bag and 170 mls of hot water. Keep kneading until it forms a clay-like ball and shape them to about 1 inch.
3. Prepare a pot of boiling hot water and drop in the dango. You’ll know when the dango is done because you’ll start seeing them float up top. Then you transfer that into a bowl of cold water or ice water.
4. Start grabbing your soaked skewers and assemble. Traditionally, you would put 5 pieces in one skewer but you could do 3-5.
5. For a nice crispy touch, place dango onto a heated skillet until it browns on each side.

*Instructions for the sauce*

1. For the sauce, mix in soy sauce, water, mirin, brown sugar , and potato starch. Mix that all up and heat it up in a sauce pan. You’re going to constantly stir and reduce sauce until it thickens slightly.

Pour sauce onto the dango, serve, and enjoy!

The longer you cook them are they more soft and chewy? Or do they get tougher?
