"If you want to preserve muscle mass while fasting, don't fast." Accurate.

Instead of fasting, drink your protein shakes. Genius 💪🏼

"the best way to fast, is to eat through out the fast"

Brilliant.

Interesting, so what I’m hearing is just don’t fast. Thanks Dr. Mike!

I did a 4-day protein sparing modified fast. 1000 calories of a 200g mixture casein and whey, and 20g of collagen peptides, with a couple calories for electrolytes too, each day. When that finished I did a 3-day refeed with ample carbs to replenish glycogen. None of my muscle measurements went down, and I lost 2lbs of fat in the process. I lifted hard each day of the PSMF and walked 10KM. It was for the sake of an experiment so I don’t recommend anyone do it that many days in a row, but if you’re trying to cut there’s definitely worse options out there. I’m thinking about doing it once to twice per week while I’m slimming down. And no, it didn’t lead to binge-eating unlike a water-fast. Pretty cool stuff.

I'm 40 years old current weight 224lbs, I was 452lbs when i was 35. I've lost 228lbs naturally through intermittent fasting, calisthenics, and switching my diet to vegan. During my fast for "lunch" i eat 2oz of pistachios/almonds 12g of protein and a vegan protein drink 18g of protein. Then i eat one large meal for dinner high in protein, moderate wholefood carbs, low calorie, and very little fat. Then 2 hours before bed after my workout i drink a protein shake. I have an "A" day and a "B" day workout, I do 2 days in row workout with 1 day rest in between and repeat. This combination is what has allowed me to shred fat and build muscle. You are absolutely correct in your assessment of this process. Well done keep it up. Love your videos Dr Mike.

I like it. It’s not fasting but it limits calories

I'm 66 years old, 5'10", 175 lbs. Just started working out 20 months ago. I'm retired. So, hitting the weights 4 days a week for 1 hour is my only physical activity. I eat 3 meals a day. I get up around 10 am. I have coffee. I work out around 3 p.m., consuming 18 oz of water during the workout.. After my workout - around 4 p.m., my first meal is a 72 oz banana smoothie. My second meal is a well-rounded dinner around 9pm. I eat turkey and seafood only. Mostly salmon, whiting and tuna. My third meal is dessert around midnight. Most of the time, it's ice cream and cookies. 😂 Those 3 meals equate to approximately 2, 000 calories. I go to sleep around 2am. Since I've started lifting, I've lost fat and put on tons of muscle.

This is very interesting. I used to work as a Muay Thai coach and when fighters would want to go up a weight class an old UFC coach posted a fantastic eating guide online and on Sunday they would do only protein fasting or low 500cals with just green veg and the weight gain was amazing.

U dont lose muscle in fasting, when u enter ketosis ur body burns fat for energy, and youre growth hormone goes up which prevents muscle loss

The concept of fasting while cutting is to help psychologically by introducing some form of restriction. So, shortening the window where you eat more densely caloric meals, helps with that.

What Dr. Mike is saying is “keep your restricted window so you can only allow yourself to eat whatever junk you wanna eat, within that window. Then outside of that, high protein and veggies or high protein alone”. It’s honestly genius.

This is the value of having a diet coach.

I mostly do fasting to keep my body free of waste and to enact autophagy. I did it at first just to keep an easy calorie deficit but the more I build muscle the more I have to eat anyways. These days I just really love how healthy and energetic I feel from it, personally it really does wonders for digestion and bowel movements.

You either fast or you don’t. Both are tools for different purposes.
