I don’t mind the gym environment. A new gym opened up near me last year and I went and spoke to the owner to see what they could offer a recreational runner. He told me to sign up for its Physio-led pilates; I was told the instructor was a recreational runner too. So this is what I’ve been doing. Glad to see that the 5 exercises you’ve linked to at the end are more or less similar to ones we do in our hour long pilates workout.

The advantage of pilates class is a complete absence of grunting pumping gym bunnies, as they tend to have very different goals. In all the gyms in all the world, I’ve yet to see an Arnie type guy running on the treadmill.

The statistic stated in the beginning is really terrifying... thank you for posting this video. Its great motivation to do strength Training and be consistent with it.

This is vital for all runners. As I reach the age of 61 next month, I love cross training especially after running my 10th marathon at Cape Town Marathon, about 100 21.1km, no idea on the 15 or 10km races since starting to run at 47 years old. Since cross training I found that I could run longer, faster and stronger than before (2017 when I joined gym) also without injury! I am enjoying my running and thank you for the helpful advice and tips.

I will and I'll be 60 next week and finish 10 half marathons this year for the fifth attempt to do so and complete.
