Once I used the Nikon Z9, I sold my Sony A1 immediately. The Nikon Z9 excels in virtually all areas. In fact, the Sony A1, even as the Sony flagship, has line-skipped, binned, or cropped 4K video (I suspect to protect Sony's cinema camera line). Only if you are using 8K does the Sony work well. Still, though, the Sony A1 is missing several features found in the Z9, such as shooting 8K/60p uncropped and 12-bit RAW (like the Z9 has). The Nikon Z9 offers all video (8K, 4K, 1080p) as oversampled, full sensor readout—with no line skipping, binning, or cropping; plus, it has waveforms. No external recorder needed because the Z9 will record all video modes directly to the blazingly fast, and much less expensive, CFexpress Type-B memory cards. No need to buy an external recorder since the camera will handle it all internally. I have shot literally hours of video with nothing more than the camera warming up a little. The battery lasts forever. The other day in Great Smoky Mountains, I shot over 40 thirty-second videos and piles of still images, and the battery was still over half full. Honestly, the Nikon Z9 is the most feature rich pro camera I have used in over 40 years of professional photography, and now professional video.

I have both, Sony and z9. Z9 is the best for photography in case of autofocus, color accuracy and resolution. It can compete with medium format in stills . For video also it has a top specs . You don’t need to purchase Atomos or any other external recorders, pay extra money for pro res or raw, for most situations no need to build a monster transformer setups and pay for every cable . 8.3k 60fps raw nlog internal , that’s great! Name any other camera in this price range with same specs, I don’t know . So far it is the best camera right now from both worlds in my opinion.

The question isn't whether the Z9 is up to competition, it's the exact opposite. Nothing comes close to the Z9 at the moment both for video and stills. Not to mention the lenses that are best in class as well, least amount of focus breathing short of dedicated Arri lenses costing 20, 000 Euro a pop...

How can you say it isn't the best at video when it's the only one recording raw in camera in 12 bits at 8K60p without any up/down scaling, with the least amount of rolling shutter and the best video AF, no over heating at all, no limit to amount of time shooting, uses the best media format (CFExpress B) has a full size HDMI port, ...??? It's an absolute slam dunk.

The only cameras topping the Z9 for video would be Red or Arri costing 3-4 times more.

By the way, your tests show the Nikon to be way ahead compared to the Canon in terms of video AF, although your comments only mentions a slight advantage for the Nikon...

Excellent review! I own and love my Nikon Z9 and feel like I'll never need another camera for the rest of my life. It's that good! And the cool thing is that keep updating it to add even more value to it.

Nikon scored by getting you to review it. As a Nikon and Sony shooter (though sadly) Nikon is going, I’m so happy they got you a mirrorless camera to review. This is what they truly need. To get it in the hands of video shooters! Awesome 👏 review

I think giving 8 for sony video while only 7 for nikon is unjustified to say the least, for one thing, it is in the video category that the Z9 outshines the competition specially with the latest firmware updates

Uninformed review. Z9 produces true RAW video. Not debayered raw. And it does it in 8.3k 60, internally, unlimited without any heating. It’s got a body of a tank. And it’s less than a Sony in video! That reflects poorly on your ability to make basic judgments.
The rest has to catch up to the Z9. And they have a long way to go.

Z9 is a monster! I sold my BMPCC6Kpro
Z9 doesn’t compete; it’s way above everything right now
The only trouble is you need time to learn how to use it, complex camera

As soon as Apple will support the Z9's RAW video format in Final Cut Pro, you'll probably start to see a lot more Z9 video work. 8K is awesome at 60p. And 4K at 120p is amazing - especially when it's down-sampled from 8k.

I think one thing that you did not point out is that most video cameras have a built in "fan" and are not weather sealed. If you are going to record animals in savanna, Canon C70 or Sony FX lines will catch dust and get damaged. And when it rains, you can't use them. Nikon Z9 does not have a fan and is weather sealed so you can take them anywhere.

It would have been so good if Nikon was about 3 years earlier with the Z lineup and about a year earlier with the Z9. It's so good. I've used Nikon for 15 years now and almost jumped ship so many times, got the BMPCC4K at launch and last year got the Z6ii. Didn't think it would be very good for video based on the specs but for 8-bit files it's surprisingly good. The braw of the 4K is definitely better but not by as much as I thought. If you know how to grade, even the baseline Z cameras are pretty good for video as well.

With regards to autofocus, you can adjust the speed in the menu. This comes in handy when you want quick focus for fast paced environments as well as smooth racking in more controlled settings.

When I switched from the OG Nikon Z6 to the Sony A7III (XQD Cards were too damn expensive at the beginning, and I started filming weddings, so I switched to Sony for the SD Slots basically.) I couldn't believe how much of a downgrade I did, especially since every single person was bragging about how good the A7III is, and how much better it is compared to a Z6. The Nikon was the superior camera in every single way with the exception of the dual card slot. Colors, screen, EVF, menus, ergonomics, customization, IBIS, IQ... EVERYTHING was worse after the switch, and the worst parts were 100% the screen and EVF, completely unusable in sunny weather plus a few stops of exposure difference between the EVF and LCD.. While the newer Sony's are actually good, the reason people stay away from Nikon, even after the Z series arrived is the YouTube camera reviewers, that did the Z series no justice.
And yes, I am still a Sony shooter..

I never disliked a YouTube video, but I did now! You made it sound as if Nikon with the Z9 is 'finally' catching up, while in reality, no other hybrid full-frame camera from any manufacturer comes close to the Z9 for video! Nothing! But I was glad to see other comments explaining to you exactly why the Z9 blows all other cameras out of the water.
