LYRICS:
Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
Looking back at the years gone by like so many summer fields
In '65, I was 17 and running up one-on-one
I don't know where I'm running now, I'm just running on
Running on (running on empty)
Running on (running blind)
Running on (running into the sun)
But I'm running behind
Gotta do what you can just to keep your love alive
Trying not to confuse it, with what you do to survive
In '69, I was 21 and I called the road my own
I don't know when that road turned into the road I'm on
Running on (running on empty)
Running on (running blind)
Running on (running into the sun)
But I'm running behind
Everyone I know, everywhere I go
People need some reason to believe
I don't know about anyone, but me
If it takes all night, that'll be all right
If I can get you to smile before I leave
Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
I don't know how to tell you all just how crazy this life feels
Look around for the friends that I used to turn to to pull me through
Looking into their eyes, I see them running too
Running on (running on empty)
Running on (running blind)
Running on (running into the sun)
But I'm running behind
Honey, you really tempt me
You know the way you look so kind
I'd love to stick around, but I'm running behind
(Running on) You know I don't even know what I'm hoping to find
(Running blind) Running into the sun, but I'm running behind

These internet sites keep the 60's and 70's music alive for so many generations to come. This era of music was, by far, the greatest decades for the greatest music of all time. Long live live music!

The Running on Empty album was released in December of '77, my senior year in high school. Class of '78! Where the hell has time gone. Still rockin. 😎🎸

I will never forget how kind Jackson browne was to me and my sister at a concert in Boston Ma back in 1980. We were trying to get closer to the stage because we couldn't see very well. A bouncer yelled at us and tried to make us leave. The concert hadn't started yet and Jackson told him to leave us alone. He said they are fine, it's ok. Who else would have taken notice of that going on as he was preparing to do a show? Class act.

In 75 I was 17 and bought my first Jackson Browne album. Still one of my best purchases and I was 'Running on Empty"!

Playing this on our cassette stereo in a 68 Volkswagen station wagon in ‘78 during a cross country road trip with my dear brother and a close friend crossing Lake Pontchartrain coming from Hot Lanta enroute to New Orleans. I still can’t cross that lake without thinking about this song and the joy in our hearts listening to it. Kudos to all who made that era a special time.

It was summer of 78. I was 16 rolling down the freeway in my 70 firebird that me and my dad spent 2 years rebuilding. Sunny Saturday morning, Window down and BAM this song comes on the radio!! I am hanging my head out the window singing along, Looking down at my front tire, Rolling along. I will never forget how that made me feel. Thank you Jackson for the many smiles and emotions your songs bring into this world.GOD bless

Kids today don't know what they missed. Jackson has been around most of my life and I still love his music. Part of the Laurel Canyon scene that brought us so many greats.

Can we all say how incredible that intro was? No one was late. This song instantly takes me back to my youth. I was born in the '60s but grew up in the '70s. Timeless.

I was at NAMM a few years back before the Pandemic on the show floor. Jackson Browne was standing 5 feet from me and this girls jaw dropped. I could not believe it. No one around but us and we got to shake his hand up close and chat with him for a Love NAMM.
